Please Educate me! 1.6 gti

Hi, well after one years driving experience i feel that insurance companies might let me at a mk1 gti 1.6. I'll have about ?2000 to spend can we have a discussion regarding what i can get, where to look and importantly.. the insurance. I hope the insurance will not batter me because i want one so much :( i got a quote for about ?1700 last year on a 1.8 and that was before i had even passed..

If you're prepared to pay a lot of money (in my opinion anyway) for insurance, or you're just mad about the GTi then go for it.

However, once you turn 25 you can get a classic policy insurance for it - I pay ?220 fully comp and agreed value for a year, which is reasonable I think. Until then it's going to be in the region of ?1k for you I'd say, and for that money you could buy a whole Mk1 outright.

If I were you I'd get a Driver until you're at least 21 - insurance won't be so high, it'll look like a GTi, and it won't be that slow.

Just my two cents…

I had my Lhasa green Gti 1.8 when i was 18, it cost me ?1200 to insure it in 1991   it was worth it though as its what i wanted, if you have the space and can afford to insure/run it, get one, whats the point in waiting 2 years only for insurance companys to hike the prices again! just find the right car first and go from there, if you cant find one then just keep saving up while you search, thats what i do and i am 34 now!!! got a vr6 and a mk1 they cost me ?300 each to insure on seperate policys fully comp each for a year, so it does get better….slightly!
