Gorgeous mate. That MK2 comes a close 2nd IMO. They look great sat there together. Bet the MK1 got a load of attention

This might be a tad thick, but what's so special about the mk4?
It's an early one, being an S reg, but it's not a top model, and it's not totally original…

Agreed X but what's not standard on it? The wheels?

The wheels are from a Highline, although they may well have been an option on the S (which I believe that is).
It also has those (IMO) retched retrofit aero wipers, which totally ruin the sleek 'hidden' wipers that VW pride themselves on.
Also the passenger side wiper spindle cap is hanging off, and I'd be amazed if that number plate is standard. 'Tis very clean though, given its age!

May be wrong here but wasn't the MK4 the one which had the first pressure diesel engines? that's pretty special.. my 100bhp TDI used to do 50-60mpg, did 650 miles on a tank once, but that was when diesel was about 80p!

the mk4 isnt old enough to become a classic yet, hence why no one goes out and 'restores' them, like we do the mk1's!

I think the wheels are Montreal 2s aren't they, first offered on 2001MY 20vt Gtis - I bought one in late 2000 that had them (geeky anorak fact!)
Nice wheels though, if not period.

The very same, the Pd (pump deuce) engines lived a short but glorious life in VWs, very economical, but quite quick, very torquey - I've got a tweaked 115bhp Pd in my Bora, up to about 150bhp now and easily managed 55mpg-60mpg on my commute
That mk4 is a 1.4 S, registered on 13/02/1999 - the first mk4 being made in August 1997 so it's not particularly old, or new. Nothing special about the model and not totally original. I'm at a loss.

I assumed that they had it just to display the evolution between the Golf Mks, besides id rather see that Mk4 in the lineup instead of a Mk3!!

There was a small press event at my local VW dealership, but word says all they had was a big wig from VW and a base spec mk7

My local VW dealership put a few MK7's on show over half their showroom and had a few in apparently but was a bit of a damp squib by all accounts

I don't see why they've brought a new 'un out? there's little to no difference in their looks, and despite them being the heaviest golf yet, they offer it with a 1.2 TSI engine developing 83 bhp…
