Ok so this maybe the worlds most stupid question?

Is it possible/legal to weld a hartop onto a covertible mk1? obviousley i would be removing the soft top lol but all the mk1's i find are soft tops and im not so keen on them? Daft question i know but im no mechanic and not clued up on the legal side either, many thanks. And the ones i find are restorations and reasonbley priced.

Wanting a MK1 golf to do up. Let me know if you have one :)

can you not just buy a tin top? or are you after a later golf and there fore want a cabby? have you looked at mk1 golf citi's? over from South Africa?

You are right - That is possibly the daftest question I have seen asked on here!

I wouldn't say it is impossible, but it certainly wouldn't be easy, and what exactly would be the point - It would be a monster.

There are plenty of hard tops for sale out there, you either aren't looking hard enough, or your budget is limiting you, as they do tend to fetch good money.

Urmmmm, is this conversation real? I think if you had to weld a top on it, it might need an inspection form VOSA. It dont think the structure would be strong enough if it was involved in a RTA. Its a worry if you ask me. My advise would be dont do it!

I don't think it would have anything to do with VOSA, as the car is structurally sound with just a piece of canvass strapped to it.
If anything, it would become stronger than a floppy top already is!!!

Thats is you leave the roll br in. Never seen a tintop with a cabby roll bar in. A roll cage maybe but………….each to there own!
