Odd Car seats !!!

Hi all. Thanks for a great website. I have a burning question for you all.

I have a 1985 mk1 Gti Cab and the red striped seats in it are very tatty. I rang dave at dbtrim (very helpful man) and  informed me that the glf cab never had the red striped cloth seats fitted as standard. !!!. I was pretty sure that my car was truly original (No Bling !!). can anybody add to this. perhaps somebody elses cab has these seats ?. Im not going to change them as I like them too much bt it would intresting to find out if they are original or not ?

Thanks everyone

Jules.

The seat colour depends on the colour of the car's paint - what colour is your car?

Colour

Hi, Thanks for replying. My Cab is black. Im pretty sure the interior is original. Dave at DB Trim seemed to think that cabs were never fitted with the red stiped trim !. I have the red stripe around the dash as well.

Dave should get a good recommendation on this site - He is so helpful. He is sending me 2 good condition drivers seat bolsters for ?35.00 including delivery !!. Its nice to find a genuinly good business that doesnt rip you off.

Regards.

If these are the same seats as the ones that came in Red Mk1 hatchbacks, then they are likely to be replacements, not the original seats for the car. Except for the Sportline special edition, there weren't any red seats in black cabriolets (unless there are other special editions that I've forgotten).

Also, the red line around the dash is most likely from a 1600 GTI (up to 1981). These are getting fairly rare, so don't paint it black or anything - change it if you don't like it (I think it looks ok - it mirrors the grille surround)

If the seats are in good condition, I wouldn't worry too much about whether they are original - once you like them, that's what counts…

DB Cartrim have been mentioned here before a few times, and always in a good light, as far as I remember.

good info..

Thanks for the Information. Looks like somebody has replaced the interior at some point ?. A bit worrying - but probably innocent (i hope). I was hoping to get the cab into original condition, but I dont think having the red dtripe seats will be detrimental to it, In fact I think it looks good.

I suppose after I have reconditioned them I could always put the drab grey ones in and sell the red ones  - have you seen the price of them on the dreaded ebay - over ?200 !!…..

Thanks gain

Not sure if was still the case in 85, but only UK Mk1 GTIs had colour coded seats. In Europe you could mix striped seats and body shell colours, as detailed in many euro brochures . My 81 1600 is a RHD import in Alpine white, but came new with red striped seats and red stripe round dash. Check V5 to see if car was registered oversaes or imported?

Thanks

Hi, Thanks again for the info. Judging by the state of the seats e.g very worn and faded and the fact the dash has the red trim I think personally that they came with the car. I wouldnt have thought somebody would have fitted seats in such poor condition.  I think I will get the list from DVLA of previous owners and try and find out.  Am I right in thinking that there should be an identification plate somewhere on the car denoting the trim code that is fitted ?.

The original trim code is printed in two places:

- label on front page of service booklet (except on Series 1s)
- build manifest label found on the underside of the rear seat frame (at least for Wolfsburg cars depending on the guy working on the line at the time!)
