Now *I* need cheering up

I just forked out a lot of money to get my car "fixed" at VW, and the original problem is continueing (the original problem being she cuts out when cold because the revs go way down). They did fix the seized fuel injector.

Now, the car idles between 15 and 20 when warm, and still dies when cold - possibly worse than it did before the injector seizing problem.

On top of that, the stereo isn't working (I haven't checked the fuse yet), and somewhere between the tow truck, the first garage and the second garage, they've rebroken my glovebox hinges.

My car had been so reliable until the fusebox went a few months ago. I'm getting really sick of not having my car in working order. Someone make me feel better, please.

I'm already on my second VW garage in the area, and they're Jean Lain who have a really good rep. I'm pretty sure the other damage was done before it got to them, and they have offered to look at the radio for me if it's not just a fuse. Partly, it's prollyt he language barrier as well. I can speak some French, but not enough to know what I really want to say. And I don't really want to ask French boy to come back with me now that we're not together…that would just look either desparate or like I'm using him (which I would be).

Wow, I'm guessing if I said that in the first place, a few other things would be broken on my car!

Check the condition of your fuel tank - it sounds like you've got dirt in there. There's an inspection cover under the rear seats. I'd also replace the fuel filter as that my be clogged with dirt now.

I'd then adjust the mixture (3mm allen key just next to the metering head) and finally the idle, which is a 7mm bolt on the back of the throttle body.

ok ok the last one was a bit harsh and did make reference to France being invaded many many times 8O and everyone being called Jean Pierre

this should be a better approach

basic translation is….

Please can you check the fuel filler pipe in case it is rusty, if it is can you replace it and also check inside the petrol tank through the inspection cover under the seat to see if dirt has gone into the tank, may also help to put a new fuel filter on the car to see if that helps the running problem

Thanks mcscrew - I've seen Cabriaulait's description of how to remove rust, so I'm going to find myself a nice big magnet and try that myself. I have never really done anything mechanical to my car, but I think it's time I learn about cars.

Wanted: dubboy who can teach me about mechanic stuff and is willing to be my bee-atch here in France. Mountain biking and swimming in Lake Annecy thrown in as well!

Topoftherange, thanks for that: the fuel filler pipe was replaced late last year so it's a likely problem, as it was rusting out before that. I reckon I'll steer clear of referring to the pipe as "pipe" (hose is better, but I've forgotten the French word for it - it's really hard to say …"breuyeu" or something`). "Pipe" has a very rude meaning and as a girl, I definitetly don't want to be saying that to a mechanic….although I suppose I could save a lot of money if I offer that "service"…

If its a problem with the fuel supply (crap in the pipes or something similar) then testing the fuel pressure should show something.

Sounds to me like it might be the warm up reg (assuming Mk1 cabs have these like the later tintops did?). Again someone checking the fuel pressure readings at cold and as the car warms up should be able to see if this is the issue. The Haynes manual has the correct pressures and the procedures.

I spent ages trying to guess a problem where the car ran fine from cold and then just cut out / died when warmed up. Checking the fuel pressure identified that the warm up regulator was knackered (as was a second hand spare I got from somewhere else). Ended up getting a new Bosch one from GSF for about 130 quid which cured the problem.

Not sure if this is the issue with your car, but with hard to track down fuelling issues its always worth checking the correct pressure is being delivered to the injectors. If the readings are Ok at least you know its not that part of the system.

Good luck.

…and I'm guessing that you'd be able to, like, do stuff to my car, so you do meet some of my criteria..
