No Logbook or reg Number

I currently have a mk1 golf gti which i purchased of a freind of mine over a year ago which he has had for over 10 years and over those years he has lost the logbook and reg number (what a plank i know!!) i'am looking to find out the reg so i can get the logbook, i sent of a form to the dvla with the vin number on it but they snet it back with no letter to say what was the problem, so i'am just putting this measage on here to see if anyone has come across this problem!

go in to vw dealer and give them the vin number and they shoud help you get th reg number pal

Does your mate have any photos of the car?

Have you looked at all the windows just in case it had the reg etched into them?
Also doesn't your mate have any old MOT's or tax disc's from the last 10 years?

i'am on the case guys!!thought i was in luck when i seen the old tax disc in the window when i was looking for etching but then spoke to my friend and he'd changed the windscreen gutted!! and he had no old pics of the car, cheers guys for the replys
