night time driving and fog

might be olde age creeping on but driving at night and fog by day or night has put the shakes on me recently,me keeps thinking of the accident on the A6 or was it the M1,about 10 years ago into London. I was delayed by 6 hours that day when a motor bike ploughed into the back ofa lorry at 5 am in deep fog, i couldn't see 1 inch in front of me, its a miracle that im here today. that poor guy died that day.

its a fact that your perception of your speed is a cog out, I watched a programme about driving in fog, because you cant see anything to relate your speed to in the distance you tend to think you are going slower than you are so if you feel you are doing 50mph you are actually doing more like 70mph and this is the real danger in fog

I do the same as you just take it slow and keep looking at your speedo
this is more relevant when on a motorway or duel carriageways.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

ok driving in fog you drive on instruments to monitor speed, do not tail gate cars in front as that is a false sense of security,

if you have front fog lights use them, if not use DIPPED!  headlights. look out for centre white lines and marker posts, if you use full beam all it does is reflect light back to you and reduce your perception further

only drive at a speed as you feel safe, and do not be tempted to go faster because of tailgaters, let them make the manovere

pull over and wait in a safe spot if it gets THAT bad.

always be prepared to stop.

if at all possible avoid the journey

Good tips. Yeah, full beam is useless - it just lights up the fog like a brick wall! I often have to drive on a foggy road at 5am, but luckily there's no-one else about and I know the road like the back of my hand. Thick fog at night is really spooky though isn't it?
