newby confused....

Hellooo!

I have a black sportline on a j plate, and love just about everything about it, however i really don't like the handling, and i would like to put my sub, amp… infact my entire stereo in to the golf.

I have plans to whack my install in the boot, and on a new custom parcel shelf (so as not to ruin the originality of the car), so… this leads me on to my problem…

IF i do go ahead and pile this mountain of speakers in to the rear of the car, it will basically look bloody stupid as the rear will literally be decked to the ground, and it will also make the handling even worse!

Ultimately, coilovers are the answer, but i'm not sure which ones to go for. I've heard fk highsports are reputable, but not too sure??
Also want to try and get a set as cheap as poss. ???

Also, because it's a j and i know certain aspects of the car are taken from the mk2, will mk1 or mk2 coilovers fit the car??????

I apologise for my nievety, but we've all gotta start somewhere!

Cheers in advance for the advice,

Mark

Hi Mark and welcome. The MK1 has always been known for its good handling! (altough maybe a bit of body roll!)

Is everything ok with current set up? i.e. top mounts, wishbone bushes etc. If these need replacing you really want to try this first.

Do you know the finger test? (steady!!) If you can fit your finger between the top plate of the top mount and the rubber then needs replacing.

Hope that helps some. As for sticking all that ICE in the boot, I guess depends on how much it all weighs?

Cheers
Andy

a heavy stereo setup will ruin the handling a little but if its aural pleasure you seek then go for it
The mk1 should be fun to drive and handle fairly well but as hairy said check that the standard setup is up to the job before changing it. If your stereo is going to be mega heavy then coil overs may well be the way forwards - theres loads of choice so look about abit first

Cabriolet's are already quite heavily weighted down in the boot compared to the tintop. You'll need to find a happy compromise between the stereo and the weight I think!

Drew.

BTW MK1 cabbies of all ages even up to the final cars still use MK1 parts, some engine parts are common between mk1 and 2 but thats about it - besides odd things like door handles etc

the car does look weighed down at the back already.

when i've go two mates in the back it just decks down to the ground to the point that there can be minor scrubidge burning on the country roads.

i had a mk4 polo prior to the sportline, and loaded my boot full of my stereo kit…

when i took it all out to sell it the suspension raised by a good 2 inch or so.

at the end of it all, i love my music, and need some bass in my car as it is my daily runner at the mo. i have a 6 channel infinity amp that's the mutts nutts, 12'' infinity sub, vibe, pioneer and alpine speakers all piled up on my bedroom floor begging to be put in to the golf.

if i pull it off it will be louder than the polo as i already have infinity components up front, and 2 ways in the rear cards.

can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!

with the handling… i was refering to the body role issue btw.
just want things stiffened up a bit. i have the car booked in for a full service, new timing belt, new induction piping (as mine's split), and full waxoil job for under the car.

can't wait to slowly build it up to a point at which it would have been roling fresh ouit of the showroom 15 years ago! It's only done 72,000 miles too, and the engine's clean as a whistle, so it's all good!

Cheers for the advice guys!
