New mk1 owner possibly. Advice please

Hello guys. This is my first post!

I'm thinking of getting a mk1. I have owned many mk2's in the past and various other cars. Thing is I am unsure of the practicalities of running one daily.

I will need to take the car to work most days although it is only a 2 mile commute. I don't have a garage but I have a VW specialist around the corner and I am OK with the spanners but by no means a mechanic. How do you lot find running mk1's as daily motors?

I have found a nice mk1 16v conversion that I am going to go and look at. Have you any tips for where to look for rot? Is there a buyers guide anywhere?

Sorry, I know thats a few questions but any help would be appreciated.

Ta, Matt

welcome to the forum Matt!

There is a very useful guide on our homepage (or more conveniently, see here)

The mk1 GTI is the most reliable in the range, and it very easy to work on with the help on the Haynes manual.

Any more questions, just fire away!

Cheers, Andrew

i used to drive my 1.3 cl on a 90 mile commute everyday! she was fine! :) only let me down once in 2 years!

Please don't call me fella- its deeply insulting to one whom is no such thing! ;)

Welcome to the site Matt.

My only concern would be damage to the engine.  If your work is only two miles away, the engine oil won't have enough time to warm up thus causing excess friction.  There are several other problems that can arise but I really can't remember them at the moment    I'm sure someone can add to this though.

They're really solid cars and as long as you look after it (regular fluid changes  and services) it'll just go and go.

Like Danny says a 2 mile trip won't give it enough time to warm through, so my advice would be to go the long way round every trip  If you buy a GTi you'll certainly be tempted to…
