his engine…
''''I am running an 1800cc standard gear box (even though it has been
refurbished and diff pins replaced for nuts and bolts) bolted to a 2Lt
tall block from a 1990 Passat.

It goes like a rocket from a standing start but losses it at the top
end. As I don't really travel much over 100mph I get the big smiles when
Porsche Boxters and 911's struggle to leave me!

The engine has Karl Schmidt pistons, fast flow oil pump, baffled sump,
300degree Schrick cam with vernier pully, big valve head which is
polished, ported and flowed as is the inlet and exhaust manifold, Audi
100 throttle body, K&N filter with a drilled air box, massive oil
cooler! Think that just about covers the engine!!''

it all works thats for sure, and sounds lovely.

anyone wanna buy a cabby…

Is a drilled air box exactly what it sounds? How and why is this done??

Thanks

im no expert penny , but i believe that its exactly as it sounds, allowing more airflow thro the airfilter. im tempted to get my drill out!!!

As you do, i suppose it can't hurt. Has anyone got any pictures of the end result of hole drilling in air boxes?

All it is is drilling holes in the plastic at the other side of the filter  (not the intake side). if like me u run carbs iv found the best thing to do is (as recomended by my amature rally driver pals) is zip tie a tight over the carb, replace every few weeks

ill see if i can get a pic of my mates drilled airbox for u :D

its running spax springs with boge turbos 40mm at the front 35 at the back
tyres are 50s on 15 rims, the bodywork is a1 all over,  as far as i could see.
hes had it 16yrs and its his pride and joy, understandably so.

i confess it was fast enough to be scary!!

Been speaking to a mate who's just finishing a motor sport engineering degree about the hole drilled air box and says that although it sounds good you'll be loosing performance as the air pressure will be lower, so perhaps i'll give the drilling a miss!!

his needs all the air it can get cos of the cam, theres no point increasing airflow past what the engine can use , as his has this 300degree cam it makes sense, i think the next stage would be an induction kit,
could somebody with more knowledge help with this please

Yeah i can see why it would help and why it wouldn't, agreed, any experts out there to put the question to rest?

Ull have no air preassure atall with an induction kit, think thats the idea, reducing restistance to increase air flow, same concept as drilling the airbox  allowing the engine to respitate more efficiently.
if ur air filter was clogged up with crap, the preassure would increase but youd loose performance - hence the reason we change air filters

i know where he is coming from, some induction systems (advanced) require resistance to create a vortex which is in effect forced induction. technology that wont involve the mk1 i think!!

give it a go, pick up another air box, drill it, and see for urself, if its no good put the old one back on :)

any more thoughts guys? :dontknow:

like this perhaps
http://www.turbonator.com/WhatIsIt.html

theory looks great but

the engine pulls air in right, so really anything that inhibits that is a downer, surely thats why you have high flow filters ie k+n, so the vortex thingy has got me very interested but i cant find the science between that and plain increased airflow ie drilling out the air box or increasing the air intake pipe on the radiator.

bear with me cos i really dont know much about this , just going on logic really

I have one sat in my garage!  they're called 'hyclones'. im fitting it shortly

there are fins inside - similar principle to a turbine engine, air drawn in from the rear accelerated at the front. best i can describe it is it like creates a mini 'whirlwind' that blasts down the air intake.

they sound amazing! like a whistling whirling - incredible. they work on carbs too, even better as the fuel is caught up and mixed in the vortex before it enters the engine :D

that that u found was a yank site, but the same thing. iv messed about with them on 4x4's with some amazing results on petrol engines!

and u are right - anything that inhibits airflow is a restriction

What you want is air mass. The stock pipe and fitting on the front panel, created a 'ramjet' style effect from the speed of the car and the resulting air will be at a very slightly higher pressure. The drilled air box, allows greater volume of air in, at the normal pressure.

So, drill your air box but don't junk any of the original piping.
