MOT THIS WEEK. windscreen advice

Hello fellow mk1 nutters. I'm putting my cab through an MOT this week,  and im looking for a windscreen. Does anyone local have a second hand one for sale? or even know of one? and if this fails. where should i look to get a decent new replacment at a good price. any other MOT pointers/checks are more than welcome as im hoping to get it through first time. wish me luck

Hi Leggy - Where in south wales are you - if I haven't asked that already at some point!

Don't know of any windscreens off hand, but are apparently not too expensive to buy new and quite readily available…
If there is a fitting charge though, give it a miss as it is easy to fit yourself. It's getting a good one out without cracking it that people find tricky!
You could claim on your insurance - Normally only a ?50 glass excess  :dontknow:

As for other MOT pointers, what can I say…
If there is something it is going to fail on like lights, horn, play in steering rack etc, you should know about these just by doing a quick check yourself. Emmissions can be a bummer on these older cars but there is not much you can do about that until you know it has failed.

hey thx for the quick reply there.  Im from neath, where are you from?
my insurance on the golf is valid from today (swapped over from my polo, not the one you mentioned thats julian, mines the delorean wanabe..). Im with admiral untill my renewal and theres windscreen cover with it so shouldnt that make it free?? ive got a quote for ?55+VAT..
Ive done all light checks and stuff, the brakes feel very good, the handbrakes amazing, and yes i am worried about the emisions as it failed on that last year from what i can see on this old MOT. as for rust, were ok. Ive got a bit of a blowing at the manifold/downpipe joint…. do u reckon thats a fail.

Blowing exhaust COULD be a fail, but depends on the examiner and where it is leaking. A joint is often overlooked but a split seam on an actual silencer would be a fail…

?55 + VAT for the screen is not too bad. I'd just pay up and fit it myself for that.

Julian - That's right. Don't know him, but have spoken to him at the margam show. He's from Clydach way isn't he? I'm just down the road in Ynystawe…

I go to a place called "Martins Garage" on Carmarthen road in Fforestfach.
Got a mate with a VW specialist garage, "Kingsway Motors" who used to use him and I continue to go there. He knows the car now and is very fair… can be a bugger if he is in a bad mood mind you!

I see, i went to kingsway a fortnight ago to get the bearing pressed out. I usually get my MOT done in the haford but last year they left a dent in the wing as i left it there for welding, I though they were meant to do a damage sheet before hand? :dontknow: ill be going somewhere else this year though

Not heard of that before TBH…

I hang around anyway. NEVER leave my car anywhere! Andy at Kingsway lets me use the ramps and stuff to do work myself. Probably wouldn't be into Dubs if it wasn't for Andy! Known him since before I could drive - 13+ years!
