You're right, on closer inspection it looks more vague, it might not be a swallowtail. Its hard to tell because of the quality of the pic. Personally, I thought those wheels and subtle lowering were great, until I saw a GTI with those kind of wheels on, and it just looks slightly worse than the 9 spokes (but better than early flat style of alloy, or steels).

GTi protos SOP April '75
Swallowtail rear panel EOP December '75
GTi production SOP June '76
Smooth bonnet EOP July '76
QED:
1. Some proto GTis will have the swallowtail rear panel and smooth bonnet
2. No production GTi has the swallowtail rear panel and only '76 year have the smooth bonnet (for 2 months production)
The chances of finding a proto are next to nil because:
A: Protos are not allowed for sale to the public (as they do not have type approval and can also be deemed unsafe)
B: Because of A, manufacturers do not keep protos (imagine the parking area = ?? you would need to keep them all). VW did not keep proto GTi even for themselves according to my contact. Even if they did, I am sure they would have rolled them out by now for display. Hell we chuck ?Ms a year, including some tasty motors.
C: That brown crumbly stuff
The pictured car has a giveaway feature missing too for a '76 or earlier car. Who can spot it?
I'm not talking rear wiper/washer, arch extensions, wheels, standard springs either…

if it were a genuie early Gti it would have black metal handles
it has the newer plastic handles which would suggested the post 77' door change making it a newer car :dontknow:
please Dubboy send me to the top of the class
am i right

I couldn't quite make out the handles, so not sure if they are metal or not. You are right though so take a point anyway for effort.
Still not the one I was think of though…

I can spot:
lowering
non-standard wheels
no rear wiper
no rear boot lock
no plastic trim on arches
possibly, later dash???
also, isn't that car in Mars Red No.2, an earlier car would be Mars Red No.1 (distinctly 'orange') or if really early, Senegal Red.

one other question i have been wondering Rajan while where on the early GTi subject. Was the early wolfsburg steering wheel the one with the holes on the spokes ever fitted to golf gti (the one you find on really early scirocco's) i thought it was but after driving  ,sorry sitting in yours i'm confused
Production GTis always had the slots in the spokes. The "common" one with the round holes was only on Sciroccos and maybe Passat (not compared them).
Some proto GTis had another "rare" one with holes. Only ever seen a pic of it, I don't think it made it to production on any VW.

Didn't mention the boot lock, so take a point.
Can't really make out the dash.
Difficult to say on colour, it is so much affected by the ability to reproduce it on a screen, plus red likes to fade. It's No.2 that is the orangey one.
Keep 'em coming! It's something unique to early cars that I see clearly.
