I had a Mk3 1.4 that used to cut out when I dipped the clutch, I was told it could have been the lamba sensor, but I part ex it for a mk4 TDI instead :P

Knowns fault with MK3s are ignition switches playing up and duff cheap fuel pump relays that VW fitted.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Sorry to take this off on a tangent, but my engines getting tired, so when I take it out and rebuild it (later in the year) I'm thinking of getting a mk3 2.0l Gti engine and putting the mk1 manifold on it (so I can keep all the original mk1 injection set up in place)  the mk1 dizzie and flywheel/clutch .  Am I right in thinking it is a fairly straight forward swap over job to get this running in a mk1 ?

Its straightforward except its a tall block (16mm or so taller than a Mk1's 1.8 engine). Apart from that, its a nice swap but don't expect a big increase in power. I imagine the cam is softer too, so you might want to do a cam swap to a hotter one at the same time?

Back to the original question :D  it could well be the Hall sensor (fly hweel pick up sensor) losing signal, had a 16v one when i worked at vw that did the same thing every tec in the place looked at it and couldnt diagnose it untill an apprentice got hold of it and cured it

Cheers Paul, I'm not really going for a power gain, just going for a lower mileage engine and run it for 12 months or so, while I sought out the old engine (I dont rush these things   ) and as far as I know the mk3 was the last to use the old style block??  :dontknow:
