If its been stood for about a year then the usual things occur like the breaks ceasing and bushes and rubbers perishing ect. So cleaning up the disks ect may be required, or just as well it may be worth putting new disks & pads on. The oil will want changing deffinatley. And it might be a good idea to change the brake fluid too.

cool, are these easy things to do? and by bushes and rubbers perishing, you mean the engine?

thankyou

Aye they are easy to do if you have experience. By bushes i mean like exposed ones, eg anti roll bar bushes, and by rubbers i mean like CV boots and gaitors ect.

Engine seals should be ok. But if i was you when changing the oil i wouldnt have an engine flush due valve guide seals and things being old and worn. The engine flush may balls them up.

Do you have space to store it off the road? And to work on it? Do you have enough money to buy tools and parts for DIY tasks, when it goes wrong? If not, it will end in tears…… If you have enough enthusiasm, then taking things steady, searching the forum(s) for advice (you will probably find the issues you come across, are known issues, they are a popular DIY car), and if you're stuck, posing a sensible question on the right forum, will see you through. Be prepared to give over some tasks to professionals, though. For example, some bushes need to be pressed in and out, so you'd need to give this to a garage to do, etc.

Also - if its a GTI, what about insurance?

Also consider that no matter how much time, effort and money you've spent on it, its still a Mk2 which has been worked on rather than an original and well maintained one, Mk2s will always be more commonplace than Mk1s and this is reflected in their values.

if you can get it cheap then you can usually get your money back on parts if you have to break it.
the last mk2 i got was a driver, for a 100 it looked a mess, but after a bit of bodywork and paint restoring, a good hoover and service i got back 500
its a good way of learning about mechanicing too
good luck

thats it, insurance is something like 590.. that good? for a 1.6 driver

Post

If it is a clean example get it. I am 18 and drive a black five door driver. I pay ?595 fully comp on my dads insurance. You wont get it lower than that price and it works out to ?50 a month which aint unreasonable  :dontknow: . It's my first car and it is brilliant. I study mechanics at college but have had very little hands on experience. If your not clued up on cars it is a good starter car. They are very simple  to work on and parts are easy to come by. Mine has done 113k and still drives like new. If it has been taken care of then it should drive like a "warm hatch". Not fast but nippy. One thing to remember is to check the carburettor over. It will probably have a pierburg 2e2 or 2e3. When set up right they work fine but if they are duff they cause so much hassle  .  I had to play with mine alot to get it to run sweet.

Rust isn't c##p, it's lighter than carbon fibre
