MK1 TO PROMOTE MK5
I thought it would be a good idea to for my local VW dealer to launch the MK5 GTI in January with a MK1 next to it..! so i went to my local, (dealer not pub!) and asked the top man if he would like my '79' Black mk1 (as in the VW ad) in the show room next to the mk5 on launch day and to my suprise he said what a great idea so my mk1 will be famed at last but more importantly it will remind people, especialy those who are the younger generation where the MK5 roots originate from, i will post some pics when it's done…….perhaps we could all storm our local dealers and offer our mk1's to promote the mk5 and remind the nation what the Original GTI is all about…..

Nice one - look forward to seeing the pics
Perhaps I can lend mine to my local dealer - "Look what will happen to your MK5 if you don't look after it over the next 21 years!!"

My GTI was used by the VW dealer in Newark for the launch of the MK5. This was prior to me buying it. I to was hoping to get the Lincoln dealer interested in showing my MK1 for a MK5 GTI launch.
I wonder how many MK1s we could back into VW showrooms :?:

What a fantastic oportunity to get a little discreet web site plug as well! You need to stick a little flyer with the web addy on the dash and get the local press involved as well!

Just as a reminder in case you haven't, but ensure you have insurance through either your own policy or the dealer.
I have done this before and ensured the dealer covered any potential losses (theft, damage, etc). Remember your car will be in a brightly lit showroom for all to see at night unless they cover it up, etc. GTi = Guaranteed Theft Item.
Also get them to sign off on the mileage in case anyone decides to "have a go"
Look forward to the pics!
Cheers

Make sure you haggle a bit too. The last time I put my mk1 in a showroom for the weekend I got an R32 in exchange for a couple of days.
It was quite hard to give that one back actually, not a bad car at all, though not really a GTI.
Loved the speed and handling, not convinced on the insurance and fuel costs though!
Cheers,
Drew.
