Mk1 Project track car

aGood afternoon,

well i have introduced myself on the appriate forum    and thought i would make my first little post.  Just wanted to gauge what people thought about my plans.

I have a mk2 as a daily drive, and i could go mad with that, but its throwing money away as i theres always going to be someone with a better car and faster car than me.  So i have decided to build a track car (road legal) for fun.  I have got my old mk1 back for nothing  8O



I would love to restore a golf, but dont have the money or the skills.  so a think with help and a bit of looking i should be able to build something for fun.



so what do you think? any comments will be much apprieciated.

Well, If you are prepared to use standard 9 spokes and don't want the sought after and expesive chrome bits and bobs, you should be able to do it very cheaply indeed!

I have mint 8 spokers if u need them as i will be gettiong some shiny deep dish babies at a later date when i get the money  

They will be goin cheep when i avantually get my new ones :wink:

what engine would you suggest to put in?  mk2 1.8gti 8v?  G40 (if i can find one)? Drive 1.6 or 1.8 twin webber carbs?

I dont know much about engines. so help would be great.

apparently, the easiets and simpelest way to do is to get hold of an early 90's 1.8 or 2.0 engine and put twin webers on it. injection requires all electrical computer crap and a complete full rewire, which is also a restriction. me and my mate were lookin into doin it on our 1.3 mk2 project car, ended up with a vr6 instead! :mrgreen:  :mrgreen:

got it mounted in but thats about as far as we got  poor little sod ended up in a scrapyard :cry:  :cry:

jesus that is a bit ambishous. my brother has a VR6 and i cant imange being able to fit it in the bay of a mk1 by myself…. but i keep telling him i will steal it and put it in my mk2.

I am awear of the injection problem, thats why i am happy to stay away and stick the mechanical engine.

i am not going mad, but would like a bit of power. is a 1.8 driver engine with twin carbs worth it, or may aswel go 1.8 gti 8v.

1.8 or 2.0 16 valve :wink: the mk3 golfs and passats etc ran them.

the vr6 should fit the mk1, it fit straight into the mk2, just the gear linkage, driveshafts, hubs, exhaust etc was completely different!! we got it in and running and that was as far as we went :cry: no time or space.

looks like you've got yourself a nice little project there, engine wise it all depends what you want from it, if you want some good power instantly alot of people go for the 2.0l 16v (ManicGTI has done his own and is a berkshire meet regular) although I have a bit of a soft spot for the old 8v, anything around 160-180bhp is plenty in a Mk1 IMO

I wouldn't use a VR in a Mk1 though as I've heard the handling is badly effected due to the weight of the engine and lack of weight for the car

I think i am heading into the thought of putting a mk2 8v into the mk1, seems the easyest.

But sometime I feel like having something different, and think of the tidy 1.6 driver on carbs. how much power could you get out of that?

then i think no something bigger is needed.

but i think i will cross that bridge when i come to it, first thing i need to do is strip the car, hoping for sun this weekend.

Then start looking at the brakes. if i am going down the scrappy what brake should i look to change to? mk1 gti? mk2 gti?

Tank_mk1 - before you start out with engine mods, which engine is in your Mk1 currently?

If you have a small block carb engine (1.1 or 1.3) then larger VW engines won't go straight in. In this case, a Polo G40 engine would be a good choice, and relatively rare IMO. There is also the option of a small block with bike carbs, which sounds good and goes pretty well. Simon_parker on here attempted this, although he didn't quite finish it in the end.

If you have a big block carb or injection engine (1.5 carb, 1.6 carb / injection, or a 1.8 injection) then the larger engines are a straight swap. I think I'm right in saying that bar the odd difference, the Mk1 1.8 8v and the Mk2 1.8 8v are basically the same engine, so don't swap in another if you've already got one!

Not many people go down the G60 route, so that would be an option. Sounds lovely IMO  2.0 8v and 16v are more popular choices, and give good power and torque.

Check out the modification section here for more info, as whatever you choose, someone will have attempted it on here and will be able to give you some advice…

Tank mk1, my first car (for learning) was a 1.6 mk2, had it when i was 16 actually, anyway it was as flat as a pancake!! 8O so was the 1.3. this is why i was shocked when my mk1 1.3 driver went like a rocket in comparison, and even my 1.1 had more power than the mk2 1.6. i was puzzled but put it down to less weight :dontknow:

it might be ok in the lighter mk1 :wink:  but the mk2's didnt feel heavier, they just didnt seem to have any 'go' in them.
