MK1 INFO 4 A NEWBIE
Just introduced myself in 'New Folks'…
I need to know where I can get as many mags on MK1's as possible…I've been 2 my local W H Smiths but they all gave me a blank look…ok if your driving a Land Rover or a Beemer….
Where can I get the mags and about when in the month do they appear on the shelves….as usual…any help for a newbie would be appreciated..

Practical Classics runs a MK1 as a staff car which is good reading. I have several old mags with articles. One of the best ones was Your Classic back in Jan 1993 8) . Don't think this is published anymore. Also May 2000 to December 2000 Practical Classics ran a restoration on a red MK1 GTi.
Happy hunting. If you email (rob@woolley11.fsnet.co.uk) me I'll gove you some more mag dates/titles that stuff has appeared in. Most of the articles are dated but are still very applicable. I tend to keep everything.
By the way there is a good video aswell on the MK1 GTi by Duke Video (I think) plus there was the Cars the Stars series that featured the MK1 GTi with Quentin Wilson. That was very good. Some of the lads on the forum might have a copy on VHS/DVD. Not sure what happened to mine - its on VHS but the wife has probably taped over it
MK1 Golf GTi Campaign:Alpine White, Vauxhall Omega MV6, Alpina B10 3.3 Touring, Dolomite Sprint, MG ZT V6, Volvo T5 R estate

1. Quality VW
VW Driver - The 'prestige' mag. Very glossy, excellent editing, but concentrates on new models and emerging technology (I think they have some special arrangements with VW themselves). Very good model histories for older cars though, and occasional mk1 specific stuff. Neil Birkett the editor is a good bloke and very friendly to us here.
VW Motoring - More down to earth enthusiast mag. Anything from the VW stable including air cooled. Quite a few mk1 articles over the years, mostly subtly modified stuff. The Editor, Peter Rosenthal, is a certified mk1 nutter.
2. General Classic
Classic and Sports Car - Favours older classic, but now covering some of the 70s and 80s hot hatch scene. (Came along to the Campaign Meet)
Classic Car - Pure classics, tends to favour some of the more expensive and exotic machinery
Classics - Newish mag devoted to 50-80s stuff, more enthusiast level reporting. (We'll be in it soon!)
3. Modified scene
Retro Rides - Probably the best of a bad lot, some quite nice mk1s in there
Performance VW - Tolerably good
Golf+ (The Golf) - Used to be excellent, but got progressively worse as editors called in excessively lairy cars and scantily clad ladies. Burnt their bridges with me by publishing a letter without my permission and proclaiming the Campaign Register was a complete waste of time.
Max Power, Rev's - If you like these you probably won't like this site much!
Cheers,
Drew.
