Mk1 GTi........... buying help!

Cheeky request!………………..but………………………….

Is there anyone in the Surrey area that would be kind enough to let me come and look at there standard Mk1 GTi? Maybe even take me out for a quick spin or even let me have a quick go?

Reason being, is that I think that I am going to take the plunge and buy one. I have bored you all before but I need to be sure that I am not making a mistake as it will be my daily driver. (Mk2 will have to go).

This may sound like a strange request but I don't believe in chasing an advert in the paper/ e-bay, tyre kick and walk away having wasted everyones time!

I am a genuine, professional mature enthusiast (sounds like a personal ad, whatever they are! ) and would like a sound honest opinion about my next car purchase.

Many thanks

Jules

If it's any good to you, I'll be at the Volksword show on Sat 1st April (if you can wait that long).  I really don't mind talking you through everything (and you are welcome to have a play with my campaign).

If that's too late, Mr V. lives sort of nearby, I can pass on your details when I see him on Sunday (I'm in Kent this weekend but I have a jam packed schedule).

I'm sure you'll get the help you need Jules from someone local.

Bear in mind that if it's gonna be your daily driver, buy the best your budget can afford (rather than going cheap and saving loads for future maintenance.) You may get a bargain if you're lucky but get one that is well sorted mechanically otherwise (and I speak from experience!) your daily driver will not be quite so daily due to visits to the garage as it will break down!!

Not trying to put you off but just keep your eyes W I D E open as a 23 year old car for a daily driver will need some TLC from time-to-time, that said, you can't beat them for banging along to work in!!  Very comfy, even on long trips and easy keep up with todays traffic (and some!)

Good luck and keep us posted.

Cheers

Hairy

You are right!
I am probably deluding myself. I should really by it as a 'modern classic' and keep my MK2 as well!
Will report back.

my mk1 is down in Brighton, you are welcome to come and look at it. Theres an E38 meet down here at the end of each month, there would probably be some other mk1s too.

I have a checklist I used when I bought mine somewhere.

One guy was surprised when I didn't ask him to start the engine, I'd already seen enough to walk away.

Dont get me wrong Jules, if I didn't need a more modern car for my job now I'd bring the MK1 to work every day, just be prepared for it to let you down now and again, but essentially if well looked after it could prove more reliable than some other more modern cars I could mention!

Hey pete, nice to see you back at the 'Ranch!'
