MK1 GTi- prices

Hello all,

I am looking to buy a MK1 as I am fed up of buying new (ish) cars and loosing a bucket full of cash as soon as I drive it away. I think the MK1 is an ideal solution, looks cool, quite good performance, rare, but should also increase value (hopefully) or certainly not reduce!!

Can any one tell me what I should expect to pay for a Mk1 GTi in good condition (no rust). Dont mind about the colouor or age, but somebody has told me that

1. Non sunroofs are better (less likely to rust)
and 2. 80/81 were less prone to rust also.

Many thanks and your thourghts are walmly received.

Welcome to the club!  :D

For what to look for on a GTI: http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=1

And for a price guide: The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

Hope this helps!

I would also definitely recommend you buy a non-sunroof model.  I made the mistake of opening my sunroof a couple of days ago (after months of non-use).  The rusty mechanism collapsed and I'm now driving around with scratches all over the panel and bits of plastic wedging it in place.  :(

On the plus side, I don't have any major rust anywhere else.  I bought mine (83 1.8 GTI, 150K miles) last autumn for ?1100.  It's been brilliant, apart from the sunroof. Strong engine, great handling and still flies.
