Mk1 Gti...Brand new!!???
Hi guys,
Just joined cause i thought i'd spread the word. I've always wanted a mk1 gti but don't have the time/money/space for a classic car yet. but this is very tempting. I'm sure you all know the Mk1 is still for sale in south africa, well according to topgear.com..
How tempting is that?

Going retro is all the rage with car designers nowadays, so rather than waste millions developing new models, it's only logical that some cunning manufacturer would simply relaunch an old model.
That's exactly what VW has decided to do with the Citi Gold R-Line, which is effectively a Mk1 Golf GTi.
To be fair to VW, the Mk1 Golf has never been out of production because it's sold in South Africa as a budget car.
And it's South Africa that the Citi Golf R-Line is destined for, although as they use right-hand drive, it wouldn't take a lot of effort to bring one to the UK.
VW has updated the engine to a 1.8-litre with 121bhp for 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 115mph.
While the performance and exterior styling may be similar to the 1970s original, even if the Citi Golf only comes as a five-door, the interior is now more contemporary.
VW in South Africa has pinched the dash from a Skoda Fabia and bolted it into the Citi Golf and even supplies modern comforts such as an MP3 player connection.
However, while there's no power steering and air conditioning remains an option, at least the golf ball gear knob is still there.
If you fancy getting all misty eyed, the Citi Golf R-Line costs around ?8,000 in South Africa, which is about what a Golf GTi cost in the early 1980s. How retro is that?
How tempting is that?

South Africa
Well I've just been to South Africa and they're everywhere. I had no idea they were made there, it seems in Cape town every 4th car is MK1 Golf shaped, they are as common as Ford Fucus here. Once whilst driving in town we tried counting to 30 seconds between each sighting. Highest number was 22……. Yes you CAN buy a new one. Will do a post with photos when I get chance.

Apologies in advance but I have to speak my mind - they are fine cars in their own right but the south african cars are not MK1 Golfs in the true sense.

Aren't they a bit to the "real" mk1s as the beauford is to vintage cars …….. just a great pretender.
To me a "real" mk1 should be something that you buy to care for and nurture on into its old age, spending as much money and time as possible learning about it and preserving it.
It is a car that invokes looks and awe wherever you take it, and when more than one is seen at once in the same place people actually stare.
It is neither common nor pretentious, not stuck up or aloof. Yet when you own one you become a member of a social elite (The VW Golf Mk1 Owners' Club) who all share the same goal and are prepared to help anyone else attain that pinnacle of perfection for their little baby.
Finally it is a car that when you first see THE ONE you know that it has to be yours and you are willing to beg, borrow or steal to get it.
Well that's just my humble opinion :dontknow:

The car is a type 17 MK1,the parts are identical to the 80,s mk1 golfs, exept they are not rotten like most of the 80's cars, thats why i brought it,i didnt want to weld one from back to front, just give it a clean and drive it.The brakes are uprated, they actually work very well, the body is put together as a mk1 was over here, the engine is exellent,it drives like a new mk1,no sloppy gear changes,no rattles etc,im well happy having one,i have stripped the car to the last nut and bolt and believe me its a mk1 golf.

Agree totally with bert,
both i and bert own both sa imports and original mk1's.
Yes are different in a sense by a few updated modifications to certain areas to keep upto todays standards of safety, and rust as yet to get to them, there was very very little on mine due to it being from the coast in namibia, i was expecting more due to this. they drive like a new car and i love it.
My original restoration mk1 is rust galore but fun to drive also, but both have been stripped and the import is a mk1 golf
A mk1 golf is a mk1 golf at the end of the day

Shame the bumpers on them look a bit ropey Other than that, I wouldn't mind a mk1 in as good condtion as the two above!
I thought they had stopped production of them as of a year or so ago?

It's not as if they are made under license by Bodge it and co. They are still VW badged so I would assume meet all modern quality requirements ( of South Africa anyway). Don't know if they stopped production or not but I read somewhere whilst out there recently, that in 2005 they were the country's best selling car.
It would seem daft to stop production of such a successful car. They are still in showrooms today, the obsession with van shaped, triangular headlighted MPV style euroboxes thankfully hasn't reached South Africa yet.
The good old MK1 seems to be sufficient for many. I cannot re-iterate enough that they are flippin everywhere there.

Have noticed 2nd hand cars over 10 yrs old are considerably more expensive in SA than here in the UK. Saw several 80's things in Auto Traders for ?1000 ish or more. Here they'd be a few hundred at most - even in good condition. My very clean fully functional sierra 2.0i GLS cost only ?330. All I've done to it is service it and drive it, nothing needed fixing. My Golf was free but that was a family hand down.
Based on this I think if you wanted to import a newish Golf (citi) then it would cost quite a lot as you'd be paying quite a bit for the car by UK standards before you even considered shipping. Probably the best value option is to get e new or nearly new one. I don't know the cost of shipping.
