MK1 for Winter??
Whilst looking on this forum and others there appears to be many available at the moment, is this because winter is approaching and everyones getting rid of theres before rust sets in???
My dilema, is do I get a good MK1 now and by summer next year it maybe rusty or do I put it off until the beginning of summer next year??
The car I get will be used daily for approx 70 - 100 miles and will be kept outside all the time?
Will waxing / polishing protect the car throughout the winter months, or do they not tend to rust as bad has other cars.
All comments and thoughts would be much appreciated.

Do you mean 70 - 100 miles a DAY! 8O
If so - that may be a little too much for a tired old (they are 22years+ you know) Mk1 Golf!

generally a good coat of underseal and wax oil in the sills etc. will keep rust at bay, just make sure you wash all the salt and grim off from inside the arches, underneath the car etc especially the inner front wings..
it's worth the effort though

Surley if serviced regulary a MK1 should be OK!

If your doing that many miles though it'd be worth finding one that's had at least a top and bottom end rebuild or replacement engine.. would save lots of work in the near future
mines just done over 120k and needs a top end rebuild and have been told bottom end generally could do with a rebuild at around the 170k mark so would imagine you'd get to those pretty easily doing 100 miles a day max.

Some days I may only do 30miles but at the top 100mile, do they tend to have problems if run for long journeys!

Should be alright, if you spend a fair amount for a good one, and/or rectify any immediate service issues. The more you drive a Mk1, the more enjoyment you get from it, right??

Aside from that (and wouldn't expect any different for 22 yr old components) never left me stranded and handles long journeys no probs - got the pace to keep up with modern traffic too but with more style 8)

VTI - Unless you want a totally immaculate show car I wouldn't worry about leaving it outdoors all the time. Mine's never been garaged and is one of the most solid ones I've seen underneath and on top. They're built to last - even if they're used as a work-horse. Mine'll see out that rotting L reg Fiesta on my street that's falling to bits already! (Besides if Lee's is anything to go by I've got another 188,000 miles left!) You'll be fine, especially if you'll be servicing it regularly & keeping it clean!

What would you deem a far amount for a daily driver?
