Mk1 Cabriolet

Do we have any Cabriolet owners out there ?   Mines a K reg blue clipper  which I love to bits except I'm always on the lookout for a mint Rivage…

Anyway does any one know why my 1800 carb clipper might be running on ?

Cheers, Jez

Definitely other cabriolet owners about, we're trying to encourage them!

As for running on. you'll probably find that your wax stat fast idle valve is knackered on your Clipper. Does it have an overly high idle when cold? (Say up to about 2000rpm)

Cheers,

Drew.

I'm another Cabrio owner. Mine is a '88 F reg GTI with big bumpers. It just hit 140k yesterday! Its the car I use as my main car so its no where near mint but still fairly tidy. I'd like to get a nice Sportline but I'd only get one if I stopped doing the miles I do. Its a bit of a shame I'm putting so many on my current cabrio but they are made to be driven and I'm having fun doing just that!

Thanks for the reply about the wax stat Drew…  Do you know where I might be able to purchase a replacement wax stat?  I've been into G&S in Hitchin and they did not have a clue….. they tried to sell me a whole new Webber carb !

Also do you know if the haynes manual for the mk1 golf talks about it?

Are there are any Rivage owners out there?  Blue or green?

Cheers, Jez

Mk1 Cabrios

Hi, nice site!
I've got a 1990 J plate Blue Rivage, low mileage and absolutely original. Every bit of paper since it was new and it looks the business.
Where is the register information on here? I understand there was originally 260 Riv's & Sportlines made in total. I know of three that are still around.

1984 Black GTi Cabriolet here, currently SORN'd but hope to be able to spend a bit of money on her over the winter to get her back on the road for the summer.

Just out of interest what order do you think a respray and a new hood should be done i.e which one would make more sense to have done first as can't afford them together?!

Cheers Andy

It depends whether the car is under cover over winter. If not a new hood maybe more urgent.

Otherwise it would make sense spraying it first, as you will have to remove the new cover again when you have it sprayed. You never know it could get damaged. Then at least you could put your nice new cover onto your newly painted car which will set if off then. Otherwise you will be fitting, removing and refitting your new hood. Best just put on once me thinks.

By the way there is a german site on ebay which is selling mohair hoods for ?350 delivered. Seems OK to me as I have a clipper which needs a new hood.

Which comes first - the chicken or the egg??
How bad is the hood? AND how bd is the rear window frame?
See Hood Saga

If it's bad replace it first, bearing in mind that it will have to be taken off for the respray  (the only awkward bit is removing the rear tension cable and REPLACING it).

But that again depends on how badly the car requires a respray !!!!!

hmmm it is a tough desicion, the hood seemed fine but when the recent snow was thawing I noticed it dripping through a slight tear above the drivers door, just bought a breathably cover for it so hopefully I can save my pennys over the winter and get a new hood/respray in the spring.

Prowler I checked my rear frame a while ago when I first saw your site and looks pretty rusty to me so looks like I'll need a new one when I come to replace it :( .

Does anyone know of any specialists in the Herts/Beds/ N London area??

ryan,

Mk1's have a bad reputation for brakes which I think is largly unfounded.  The main cause of bad brakes is wear and adjustment.  The original RHD road tests did not mark the brakes as bad!

Make sure the rear drums are adjusted correctly and that the rear cylinders are not leaking.
Make sure the rear compensator is working and adjusted correctly.
Check for excessive wear on front disks.
Check for play in the pedal to servo linkeage and repair as necessary.
Also check that something silly hasn't been done at the front (one of mine had a large disk conversion with standard disks fitted so that the pads were only 50% acting on the disk!)
Obviously change pads and shoes as required.
