Man from DVLA say no

Hi,took all my paperwork to dvla, mot, insurance and all the paperwork i had when i brought the car,sat in a hot waiting room for an hour and they said they cant register it due to no proof of a date of manufacture.I have the South African logbook but it is a photocopy and they wont accept that :(  so where do i go now? i rang vw and they say its a mk3 golf! no sorry try a mk1.
Anyone know how i can date it? i know how old it is but i need proof from vw or a organisation???

Bearing in mind that mk1orwners is an "official" club for these cars, a letter from someone here with endorsement from the club should do for the proof of age.  Might we worth talking to Tommo320 off this very website, he's had a few of these cars…

I would ring VW first and get some advice .

You will need a definate proof of manufacture before they will allow you to register this car . Make certain you have the full VIN number from the car . Try:

VW UK
Yeomans Drive
Blakelands
Milton Keynes
MK14 5AN

Volkswagen Customer Care
Telephone: 0800 711 811

Volkswagen owners club
Telephone: 01628 604 254

Good luck on this one ………

VW Customer Services gave me a letter within a few days, they were very helpful. If you can still contact the previous owner they might give you the original log book.

You also need a V55/5 form and the customs declaration form. Make sure you complete all the paperwork before going to the DVLA office otherwise you will be waiting hours!

It take up to two weeks from your application to get it registered with a reg number.
