Lost log book

I bought a car yesterday which has been stood outside his garage for months. But he's lost the log book! The car needs taxing, so is there anyway I can tax it?

I think you should be able to do it on line,with just the reg number,as long as m.o.t and insurance for it,but i not 100% sure,go on line and have a look m8,hope this helps if not soz :dontknow:

IIRC to do it online you either need the reference number from either the V5/logbook or the reminder letter they send through a few weeks before the tax runs out.

Just checked, you do need either reference number.

The only way to find out might be to ring the DVLA or something.

Does your mate have anything, the old new keeper supplement when he got the car, even the one from the current v5(doubtful though that is). I don't get how people loose documents as important as the v5.

You'll have to go to the post office fill out a form for new keeper, DVLA will contact the person who is registed on the log book asking if he has sold or past on the vehicle, which he will have 4 weeks to reply to and the DVLA will send you a log book unless the owner states he hasn't sold it !!

You will need Insurance cert, MOT for the car in question.
