Look what's popped up on Ebay again...

No offence to anyone who owns this car, but it looks nowhere near clean enough to be worth ?4500!!!

When you say not clean enough, what areas are you referring to?

IMO the bad points about this car are that it does not have the correct original parts fitted (engine, gearbox, radiator, seats, wheels, etc). It would be worth more with these parts.

Agreed mate - Non original in many ways - deffinately detracts from it's value.

Also, If i were paying 4.5K for a Mk1, I would want it to be spotless.
Have you seen the dirt on the centre console!?!?!?

Also - Speakers in the doors (DOH!) which the window winders catch on (double DOH!) so they have been removed and "requires a 10mm spacer" - like they exist!

Also - The rear arch looks like there is a ridge/mark in the paint where the arch trim sits. Would not expect this on a resto that cost ?9k!

And that's just what I can see from the pics…

Clocks say 38K too…

Quote from text:
clocks read 38000 miles, car has covered 116000 miles on old clocks of which i still have, and 2500miles on new clocks, i changed clocks and tacho for newer ones which haddone only 36000 miles as they would prove to be moore reliable in the future, original units still work 100%.

Lame reason… Why change perfectly good units???

I spotted thgis on Evilbay too. I dont think he is expecting ?4500 for it. It looks straight enough from the pics. Shame it has not got the seats and the wheels from a series 1  :(

. I would not mind having a look at it trouble is its near Aberdeen!

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

I still reckon the gap between front edge of bonnet and top of grille is toooo large.

Plus these new photos seem to show a lot of overspray, on door seal, in engine bay and to me the scuttle area looks original (i.e. not restored!)

Now, where did I leave that barge pole……

Interesting point on the scuttle area. Pretty difficult place to restore properly as I have no idea what could be used to replace those black sealing pads that are stuck down there. They are not supposed to be completely sprayed over, pretty impossible to reuse the old ones so either mask off or do not paint the scuttle unless it needs repair  :?

whats up with volkspares engines?
ive known a couple of people buy their engines (one 1800 mk1 Gti and one 8v Mk2 Gti) and they're both running fine, no problems at all.

Seems a bit overpriced to me ?4.5k should by a low mileage absolutley mint S1 imo.

Looks a nice car imo, although its a shame that the original parts have gone. He has worked hard to get the car road worthy so I don't blame him at all for trying to get the best price possible.

Hmm - if it were a T-reg instead of a V, had all its original bits (seats, etc…) and was in better condition I think it would stand a chance but as it is?  Its a bitzer (bitz of this, bitz of that)

Post

it really does need to be more original to justify the cost, i dont doubt that he has spent a fortune on it, i did most of the work on mine and it still cost a pretty penny.

The insurance company Agreed the value of my car which is totally original including seats no speaker holes and with the right 13 spoke wheels at ?4000…….what do you guys think is that about right??? i'm sure i would still be out of pocket but should be able to get another decent one in a worst case outcome?

Post

Depends on the condition of it. My '79 has an agreed value higher than that. If you PM some pics and also some more details of works carried out, mileage, history, etc I would be happy to give you my opinion on it.

should be able to get another decent one in a worst case outcome?

"should" being a keyword there!
