Leeeeeking Mk1 GTI

HI, I'm looking for a bit of advice. My MK1 is off the road just now and has been sitting on the drive for the past 6-8 months. The problem is that it has gathered a lot of water in the passenger front and rear footwells. Does anyone have any ideas of cause of this? Car has factory steal sunroof.

Cheers 8O

Check out your drain holes at either end of your bulkhead below the screen. These often get blocked up and water collects here and then finds its way into the car. My cabby did it recently and the drains were choked up.

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

Would that allow the passenger front and rear footwells to get totally flooded?

Maybe worth checking that the sunroof drain channels are clear.
sometimes  the bulkhead end can be clear but the drain holes in the sunroof get gunked up.
On one of my old golfs we had to open sunroof and get a air line down the channel(you should hear air escaping bulkhead for front channels and near rear wheelarch for the back ones). Also depends if you had the car parked on a slope?
I take it what you found is water not coolant?Maybe heater matrix? :dontknow:

I chased a few leaks around from doors to bulkheads, but now I think its coming in from the windscreen seal, drivers bottom corner  :banghead:

the two most common areas are the sunroof drain tubes as said and the windscreen seal in the bottom corners, this allows water to dribble through and behind the dash it also effects the fuse box so cheak that is ok too.
One less common place is the membrain behind the doors if it is missing after driving in the rain water could get thro. check the window rubbers on the doors too?

My top tip is talcum powder…… a light dusting over the carpet and in the morning you will see a trail from where the water came from, this can than be hovered away quite easy  and the leek sorted

i would say its more than likely the door membrane, i like the talk idea, give that a go, or you could get someone to sit inside while you ip water over the car, and see where it is coming in.
