if you can sort the fault out there and then they cant fine you, just warn you so always keep the original plates in the boot, same with things like a blown light, always keep a spare in the car.

Noooooooooot stricktly true my man………..on the bulb front yeah ok.on the plates. no since may 2003 i think it was? it has been ilegal to display any plate on a British car that is not BS kite marked, makers name & postcode and of correct font type size & spacing etc……its been argued and argued to death….German plates are a definate tug in some countys, and if you got em on expect a fine at any time!!, if you dont get one then your lucky, we all know they are illegal dont we?

Not true - even for light bulbs. The crime's already been done. Of course, there's reasonableness, and guidelines, which come into it. But a copper can use his discretion. These days they have a 'points scoring' system, so its possible the particular copper was having a quiet day and needed to rack up a few more points. He felt he wasn't going to get a decent shout over the radio in the next hour, so went for a couple of easy ones with the plate offence and the admin behind it all.

If i got done for a bulb not working and i had a spare i would ask the cop what incentive i now had to help the police in the future and send a quick note to his commanding officer stating the above if nothing else make me feel better as for  the German reg plate we all know the rules by now so sorry mate you got what was coming use them for shows not the road.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

Ive seen quite a few number plates that reflect a logo/pattern rather than numbers recently. that surely cant be legal?

by carrying spare plates or bulbs for this matter, you are surely admitting that you knew they was illegal or that the bulb was blown else why else would you carry them??????

thats how i would look at it if i was the officer that oulled you over but hey if they have nothing better to do they will pull you over anyways and find a fault, but by highlighting the fact you have German plates which are illegal your asking for trouble, but then, i have some so……. guesss its just personal preferance and if your happy to pay the fines if you get pulled

I carry a spare wheels not because i know the tyres are bald… just because someone has spare bulbs doesnt mean you knew the bulb you have installed was knackered. that's just plain daft unless you have a warning light on the dash like my A4 how are you supposed to know if a bulb has gone half way on your journey home???? :dontknow:

no points system, no agendas, nothing,  One disgruntled copper on the telly who served for 5 minutes and hes got everyone believing, he probably was given a target as he was useless and didnt generate his own work!!! did anyone consider that? take it from me guys performance is monitored obviously, but there is no set "target" or anything else, if you see an offence its dealt with however is seen fit,
if you bend the rules sometimes they break….simple as :D

mine are the pressed alloy type, but have British letters, are correctly spaced, makers name on plate and its reflective and fitted and lit correctly on rear, cant get any more legal than that

besides i just wouldnt stop

actually now you mention it i did get stopped by the police the other night, couple of cruisers from next area over looking for some action, spot me in my VR6 and my mate in his Cupra R think they gonna get a persuit or something i suppose, they looked really silly when they stopped us!! especially as their numbers were still "wet"  so we do all get tugged!!

I was told this by a Engineer i used to work with, and he was told it by his mate whos a copper.

how good your plates are also helps. Mine are pretty convincing that they are german and there are quite a few polish and germans passing though my area some times so i guess ive just been lucky, for now.

Good point! The one thing I can't stand is those half-arsed plates which are neither here nor there. You know the ones. A font vaguely similar to the proper German plate font, but with no D country signifier, pressed metal, but English spacing, and - worse of all - YELLOW!!! on the back.

If you're going to have German plates, at least make it look authentic.

i have to say the biggest give away to the police that its not really a german car regardless of the quality of your plates has to be the fact that the steering wheel is on the wrong side!

I think I know what you mean by that; but it makes it sound like it's the job of the police to generate criminal behaviour so they then have some work to do.  :D

I know the Seventies have come back into fashion, but surely retro police corruption is a step too far…
