Is this a fair quote from a garage?

People that have read my previous threads would know that I have had problems with my Cab since 2 weeks after I bought it.  :banghead:

I cured the starting issues (hopefully) - a live lead was worn through and shorting on the bodywork.

I then had a knocking noise that has been diagnosed as diff/gearbox wear.

I have been quoted ?900 to fit a refurbed box (450) and a clutch (100ish) and the rest is labour and VAT.

Is this a fair price or not  :dontknow:

Any advice welcome as I want to get her on the road but do not want to be ripped off.

Cheers

Too much !

save your cash and have a go yourself.

I always thought I was crap at stuff like this but then it was a case of  can't afford to get it fixed - so I attempted stuff and then ask me mates to help me fix it .

?450 + VAT and ?100 + VAT aren't the prices of a gearbox and clutch. It seems like they've just slapped 25% onto the prices. An OEM clutch is ?55.10 + VAT from euro car parts…..

Couple of months ago I sourced a s/h g box from breakers for ?50 dropped it off at the garage (needed it done quick) and received a bill for ?115 inclusive, no clutch.   ?900 is really taking the pee!  Will always be more for  a refurbed box of course.

they sound like they don't need your custom.
you could get a whole new ride for that.
If a garage is busy they'll charge top dollar to get rid of work.

?400 is about right for a rebuilt transmission. Its all well and good buying one from a scrappy but they're all around 20 years old, and worn out. You can only be sure of a decent transmission by rebuilding it…..

Not all of them!  Never got less that 40k out of a scrappy's box.  If a recon box is ?400 then I could have 8 un-reconned ones for that price.  I know what I'd rather do……
Fair point, you would be guaranteed with a rebuilt one.

I see your point, but if you don't have the facilities to change the box yourself, and having one fail on you at an inconvenient time, could be really costly. I am lucky in that my Mk1 is a second car; and I'm in the AA!

Cheers fellas.

Fitted a new box to a MK2 escort years ago but I was young and it was my only car - not sure I fancy it now.

I wasn't sure whether to get a scrappy box as my golf is also second car and will probably only do 2,000 miles a year in her.

I think this weekend will be thinking time and sort out next week.

EW - another meet missed !  I will definately get to one when this is all resolved ! :( Cambridge would have been good for me as well - never mind.
