Is it safe?

Hi guys, im pretty sure ive already posted this question but i cant find it anywhere!!!!

Was wondering if stretching tyres over wide rims is actualy safe to use on the road?
Only asking because im about to buy some Porsche teledials and stretching tyres look cool.
Can any garage do this or do they need special equipment to do so? and if i ask them will they be able to do it or will i just get laughed out of the place???????????

Thank you please!!

Tyres are designed and molded to fit a certain rim diameter.rim width and flange contour.A tyre which is fitted onto a wrongsize and /or tyre of rim will therefore be forced into an unnatural shape and will be inadequately seated.
Tyres have reccommended and permissible rims that they may be fitted to.
If you fit the wrong combination and its obvious when tyres look stretched then the cops will fine you and maybe give you points because you are falling foul ot the construction and use regulations.

I've heard stories of people taking a corner a bit quick and the tyre popping away from the sidewall so no, I'd say it's not safe unless you drive at 30mph everywhere (and 5mph around corners)

but then others say it's fine  8O

my view is that's it's not really safe

not very good with tyre sizes… but at a guess, I'd say 195/45 should be safe and give you some of the stretched look

don't know though, I'm sure someone will confirm or tell me I'm talking rubbish

As I answered wrong tyres and rims are unsafe and contravene the construction and use regulations.
In order to reply what size tyre do you want to put on what size of rim and what type of rim.

But if it looks streched it not correct.

Without details its like asking how long is a peice of string, :banghead:

It depends how stretched you go.  If those teledials are 8" wide, you could get a nice looking, safe stretch from a 195 wide tyre intended for a 7" rim.
Anything smaller than 195 on an 8" is a no go if you ask me.  It depends on the tyre manufacturer too so make sure they're good quality.

Have a look at this

http://www.dunloptyres.co.uk/ourTyres/motorsport/saloon/

It shows for road cars recommended tyres/rims.

There are also permissible sizes which give a little more options.

But when it looks wrong it is wrong and illegal and dangerous.

It would depend on the hump profile on the rim of your particular wheels:

But basically, the advice is don't do it because the tyre will not stay on the rim.
