any changes to the standard spec of the car once it's left the showroom is classed as modified. Even if you have options such as different alloys to the standard ones for that model is classed as modified - I've just found this out on re-insuring my other car!
By swapping a normal engine for a gti one will definately be classed as modified I reckon!

Id like to know just where the line is drawn tho - the mk1 is a 25-30 year old car - how on earth can it be standard to that definition??!! :dontknow:
I mean exhausts, different carbs, air filters, suspension, etc. these things wear and are replaced on every car! not standard then are they? but definately not modified!!

I was thinking this the other day when every one was looking at the red mk1 gti on ebay, you know the one with the dodgey dealer and re-spray etc etc, any way is it possible to get a completely original mk1 these days? What changes would be ok to still consider the car as original?

I'm now mk1less, ahhhhhhh!

errm a different engine from standard I'd certainly called modified!

but as to the other point I guess it only really counts if its significantly changing it from the origional specification, not like for like replacement of parts.

Agree with you mk1vdub. Modified is any car that deviates from the standard specification. It may have pattern parts fitted by now, but these parts themselves are produced to the manufacturers original specification, if not always quality.
