In the words of forest gump "I just feel like running&q

I'm going to start running with a mate from work.  I want to get a bit fitter for the summer….

Anyone a runner on here and if so, do the trainers you pick matter that much?  I got told there are shops that can tailor your trainers to how you run (weight distribution etc).  Is this true and what are their names and how much are they?

yes trainers make a massive difference.

less to do with load more to do with the way your feet hit the floor.

I tried running and Novo is right, they make a massive difference.

Whats good for one person is rubbish for the other so it's a very individual thing.

I binned it off and got myself a cross trainer and a weight bench, much better IMO, if you need to quit cos your knackered your already home!!  :mrgreen:

I'm not a runner but I am a qualified Gym Instructor and I'm doing my Advanced Instructor and Personal Trainer Case Study now.

If you need any advice let me know.

Good luck with it.

Go top dollar

Or go to a decent sports shop and speak to an experienced fitter. Unfortunately there are no secrets to getting a decent pair of running shoes except to try and only then buy.

most decathlon sports stores have a qualified fitter. and a very large selection of trainers. what a fitter will do is:
they measure you foot correct;
they will first tell you what type of foot you have. (normal, flat or high arch);
they will watch you run on a treadmill and tell you if you overpronate, underpronate or are neutral (the amount of tilt you put on your foot as you put it down whilst running);
then they will suggest a shoe that is best for you.

i overpronate. which means my heal goes down first and my foot falls inwards. so my trainers are mizarno renegades.

yer thats the next step. start with the shoes then go running on your tod for a few weeks. start by aiming at 1k. (you'll be suprised that it's quite a far if you've never run before)
use google earth to plan your route.

running with a mate is good but if your just starting out running with someone will make it harder.

We have got an independant shop called the Derby Runner.
The Folks there are very knowledgable.
I have small feet between a 5 1/2- 6, so it's difficult buying normal shoes let alone running shoes.
The folks here sorted me out a pair of saucony runners :lol:
I would add buy some proper running socks too, makes all the difference.

My girl friend is training to run the Brighton marathon in April and subsequently I am now running it with her- and training!

Yes trainers make a massive difference, you need to get your running technique analysed, you run on a treadmill whilst being videod- feet only!!! Then they replay it back to you, it's not to see if you place your heel or arch first but more to see if you place the inner side or the outer side of your foot down first (called pronate and somethingor other!) then they try you in trainers with the bridges built more to support the opposite side of your feet so you place your foot down evenly! If you don't get the correct shoe you can badly damage your knees or lower leg muscle and ligaments……not good- if you have some old trainers take them with you as they can be examined to!

There is a shop in Aylesbury that we went to that is called runners world or something or other- they're tops!

Also for more serious runners it is recommended that shoes are replaced every 500-750 miles as the cushioning that reduces impact on your joints loses effectiveness!
