I Need a Mk1 Dub!

Hi there. Im new here, looking about at everyones pics of such tidy cars,
Im looking to buy a tidy but cheap Mk1 or 2 Golf, preferably thre Mk1 of course, anyone got any ideas of how to look for one, and what I should be looking for?

Also, id prefer one with a lower mileage. I know this is a tough order as they are getting on a bit now, but you never know, some old lady might just still have a mint mk1 with 20k or so in it, longing to get out of the carport - i want to find that car and bring back its glory!

Since Im 19, and fairly poor, im looking for a smaller engine, but 1.6 is acceptable, [GTI at a stretch lol!] What engines were good, which ones were not so good etc, and what am i looking for to spot a genuinely good one?

cheers guys, look forward to summer, I will be!

Turbo.

Realistically, whats your budget, including running costs (the main one of these will be insurance!)

not sure...

[Sorry about the huge avater, im having problems with it]

I have a budget to buy the car of 2k, from family, this is already agreed.

lets say i may be able to add 200 to it, so my total purchase budget is 2200.

what do you think? im not sure if this is actually enough to get a mk1, but i want one anyway, so i thought id enquire!

this all depends on what you want a soft top or hard top? ie floppy top or tin top
i bought mine off ebay 2yrs ago for ?1000 it needed a new roof ?300ish fitted and a little tidying suppose i was lucky but since I've had it I've prob spent in the region of ?3500 on it which included replacement engine, nothing wrong with the one that was in, I've still got it just wanted something with a bit more poke I've had a recon box after the original went south in a big way, its had a respray thanks to some idiot running me off the road in into a bush
so like Paul says its how much you have to spend on the initial purchase
and then allow some for what you will have to do to it to get it to a standard you are happy with,,,, but here is where you will not be able to allow enough because there is always something you will see and say ooh that would look good etc
my advise is a mk1 makes a good 2nd car something to play with something for the weekend etc, remember you are buying a car that in most cases is 20yrs or more old so its not likely to be as reliable if your doing a lot of miles per year i would imagine that most of the mk1s on here are insured with limited mileage insurance, mine is 5000 miles
anyway best of luck in your search, and i hope you find what you want at the right price.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

good advice, you make a good point about the limited mileage aswell.
im a motorsport technician, so i need to be able to travel the uk to races etc, and maybe its not such a good commuter.

still ill keep an eye out, and hopefully pick up a decent car.

don't get me wrong there are members who do use them as daily drivers but it depends on the mileage in summer i use mine to got to work and back every day but its only a 12mile round trip.

hmmm, maybe. theres a mate of mine, who introduced me to this forum, he wants a daily runner. and when i think about it, its only 5 miles to work from where I live. and ill travel long distance in the race truck, so i may be able to get away with it.
a few motorway journeys each year to visit home though.

ill take your advice in consideration when buying though, and a job like mine has acess to workshop time and plenty of tools, to limit my spending on getting work done by others.
