I DONT BELIEVE IT!

After sorting out my GTI over last couple of weeks finally got it back on the road yesterday. Playing around this morning with it and had running beautifully - getting it ready to pop oevr to GTI Int tommorow. Took it out for a drive and accelerated down a bit of dual carriageway near me at which point the rad decided to bath the engine bay and bonnet in antifreeze  . 2cm split in one of the fins 8O .

Just got AA'd home (AA man gave a big grin when I fired the car up) - at least on the up side is I just rang ECP and by chance they have new rad sitting on the shelf - off to get it now  :D .

Cheers

Good luck getting it sorted. I know the feeling of mopping up anti-freeze off a shiny engine…

Sounds like the engine's looking good, got any pics?

At least replacing the radiator is a 10 minute job

It's not that cold out there is it?  8O

Antifreeze also stops boil over up to (usually) 140 degrees (where's the degrees symbol on a keyboard hey!)

Or so I'm led to believe

Anti freeze is also a corrosion inhibitor so stops that head from rotting away and the engine silting up from rust from the block

All fitted up, rad is nice and shiney :D . Think I had been pushing it with the old one as it had hardly any elements left between the fins 8O . Unfortunately forgot to get a couple of extra hose clips, bottom one is shot. So up early tommorow to wash it, get a clip, fill up with coolant and get off to GTI International.

As you say Phill and Rich, antifreeze also prevents internals from rusting and combats overheating. In fact most antifreeze is actually labelled 'antifreeze and summer coolant'.  I also use distilled/di-ionised water with the antifreeze as it doesn't have any impurities or silt that tap water can have. Might sound a little over the top, but very cheap and easy and only does the engine good.

Cheers
