Potentially this could be a good buy - from pics anyway it looks very tidy. Some general observations IMHO!

1. If rear axle mounts area has been repaired you need to check properly that it's been repaired 100% right.
2. Given above and if filler neck is rusty, the car is or has been rusty in most common places. Given there's no black stripes or tailgate stickers I'd say its been resprayed. You need to establish if this is a good job and because of a good resto or if its hiding nasty things!
3. Bee sting aerial. (personal taste if like or not but make sure not leaking!)

I think the car could be a cracker but you need to give it a thorough going over. Check out our buying and price guide on home page and dont be affraid to walk away! IMO if it was as tidy as it looked in the pics without any major work needed it would fetch ?2-2500 mark.

Let us know how you get on - you coming to Gaydon this weekend?

Cheers
Andy

Thats dong really well, 26 bids, usually they dont pick up till the last day :dontknow:  Yeah agree with Hairy on all the above   that price sound about right too, although, with the ammount of enthusiasm so far, with a few bidders it could go higher :?

Find out when it was resprayed (I am assuming it is). If its in the last year or two, and its needed rear chassis rails welding and has that type of rust around the fuel filler neck, then its not a decent job and may reflect in other areas of the car. If it was a while ago (5-10 years), then its a more 'honest' car.

In any case, I'd pay around ?1500-2000 at most. I think there's a bit of a drought of decent cars at the moment though, so you might find that someone who worries less about money, would actually pay ?2500-2750 for it!

Looks nice, but if its got rot round the filler neck and had the chassis leg patched, there could a bit more hidden beneath the surface. As Hairyarse says how good were the chassis leg repairs, could be just be MOT patching. All could be repairable, but aren't you getting rid of your current mk1 due to rust? If you're not up to wielding a welder I'd keep looking :) .

Good luck

I notice the photo of the o/s is done in a way so not to show the filler cap area, which if you say its rusty it doesn't inspire confidence in the seller to me - what else is there hiding

i would be very cautious mate, why is the vin plate over near the bonnet catch? if you notice it has no rear tailgate decal or side decals , i would pay alot of attention to the chassis leg where the alternator belt sits as it could be a 2 door base shell wi a rotten gti stuck into it, there is a mounting for a 1300cc engine beside the alternator belt and you would see if its been filled/welded and make sure you lift the scuttle tray and rubber and scrutinise the id number. the car has prob just been sprayed and no decals put back on but you better going in there with your eyes wide open. i hope not to sound a k##b .mind you tho' you get a campaign leather st/wheel with it, also its got a seat belt missing in the passengers side rear, check the strut tower hasnt rotted and the seat belt  reel has fallen out.
