How much is it worth?

Alright guys and girls, i have been offered this.

1981 'M' reg Golf, Blue
1600cc gls
convertable
111,000 miles

sensibly lowered
alloy wheels
leather interior
twin exit exhaust

just had - new carb (worth ?250 apparantly)
new brakes (disks and pads) and rear shoes
               new tyres on the alloys
new straight through exhaust with a twin exit exhaust

The bodywork is in good condition and only recently sprayed, has a little bump on the rear arch where it was reversed into a caravan but that has been repaired as best as possible as the owner does not have alot of time on his hands

These are the only pics i have as my phone is absoloutly rubbish, i will try and get some better ones

thanks

I can't really see much from the pictures. Is it taxed and tested?

Also can't be on an M reg, 81 should be W or X reg - read the last digit of the reg plate, not the first, before 1984 number plates read the other way round. e.g MUD 814X

If it's taxed and tested and is really sound I'd give around ?600. Impossible to say without detailed pics.

Cabbies are cheap this time of year though.

ahh sorry, its an X reg its MJD 184X and its tax and tested until end of next year, the guy said i can have it for ?800 but he also said i would easially get my money back on it in the summer, he said he was trying to flog it for ?1800 in the summer and he had loads of interest but decided not to sell because he wanted to make it mint, i will try and get some detailed pics soon, what do you think about getting my money back if i decided to sell in the summer?

thanks!

sounds like a decent price if its a well kept original or restored car, cabriolets are a little cheaper this time of year………only due to the potential market!!! if its the right car for a mk1 oficianado then it will sell at the agreed price! not just coz its cold!! thats a bit of a myth
In summer everyone gets the feel good factor for open air cars but the price difference isnt that great, most mk1 cabriolets stay within the ?500-?3000 price bracket i have seen, depending on year and model spec and condition obviously

I don't know if you'd get as much as ?1800 for it in the summer, there have been some really nice examples for sale in the classifieds on here for a long time.

Still I reckon you'd get more than ?800 back. ?800 sounds alright as long as it's got a good roof, with no rips etc and it's not full of filler under that shiny paint. How long is it since it was painted, and has it been outside in the damp since painted?

Lots of nasties might appear after a few months of wet winter weather.

the paint was done a year ago, its done about 10k miles in 3 years and its been driven through the summer and so far through the autum and will be driven through the winter, the roof is in good condition and leaks a tiny bit where the door shuts against the front window right at the top

yea

hi we sell alot of cabbys  more in the summer an x plate golf can reach from 300 to 1500 . but we have never dropped are prices in the winter it is still a useable car in the winter but has more  appeal in the summer . in the car is getting water inside from the corner it more likely to be the roof seals . and make sure there is no cracks in the outer roof skin  . hope this could be some help

Top tip: don't buy a car with a plan to sell it! (Unless you're a motor trader).
