I owned my first mk1 (a 1983 1.3CL, 5 door, in white) in 1999 for 1 year, but it was pretty knackered (only paid ?175 for it!!) but it did me for a year, and it was surprisingly reliable considering what I paid for it (I remember it ALWAYS started third time, no matter how long you held the key!) Unfortunitely it was scrapped, major rust problems

I brought my current mk1 cabriolet last May, so owned that just over a year, although in this time it's spent more time in my garage then actually on the road!

The current GTI just over 5 years, but I can claim to have been sat behind a MK1 shaped dashboard for at least 13+ years (MK1 Jetta Diesel 3 yrs, MK1 Driver 5 yrs, MK1 GL 6 months, current GTI and Caddy)

 :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Can't really beat that………………

Bought (swapped an Audi 100GL5S and the dealer paid the import duty etc.) my 1.5 GLS in '81, went all over Germany in it, Germany to UK too many times, taught both kids to drive in it, they 'comandeered' it and got speeding tickets in it, I got it back (rather bashed by then) in '96, some ***** smashed into it in '97, we eventually scrapped it in '99 after taking off all the good bits.
I still miss it terribly.
Had the Cabbies now for over 3 years…………wish I'd bought one new when I left the Army with that wad of money - instead I gave most of it to the Breweries and Distillers !!! :banghead: !!!!

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

1989 Mk1 Clipper 1.8 automatic - Sadly now up for sale - medical issues dictate)

1999 (Nov) Passat S Saloon 1.9 TDI (AFN) - TUG 1 (Remap by CCC ( - **** …..change pants !!) with cruise control

2000 (Mar) Passat Sport Estate 1.9 TDI (ATJ) 5 speed automatic with Tiptronic - TUG 2 (Remap and cruise control by CCC)

My golf owns me at the minute

Bought as a car for my brother - 10 years ago! it had over 100k on it then - i learnt to drive in it then it we parted with it shortly after wards (no i didn't bust it)

Then I was in work one day like 8 years later - looked at the classifieds in the local paper - seen the car (didn't think it was ours) threw the paper in the bin after reading it…

Told the bro hey think our old car may be in the paper "you binned the paper are you crazy lets go see it" says he! Back to work dug the paper out of the bin - phoned the guy yeah it was our car!

Went over to see it - he had a campaign all busted up for sale too and a guy was there and had just bought the campaign to get the glass etc - he was looking at our car too but we stepped in with like "you dont really want to buy that" no we didn't we justed hoped he would leave and he did and we bought the car back!

Then my brova got a mk1 16v mint so I took on the resto of our wee 1300 flier!

Had my 1600 GTI 3 years, had my C just over a year. Only learnt to drive 3 years ago - GTI was my first car and learnt to drive in it  . Think having no power steering and being able to feel what your doing helps no end when learining, better than the dreadful Punto I had paid lessons in  .
