whats going wrong

hi all
car is in wakefield at my mums but i live in huddersfield. Dont know much about cars at the mo but the problem is that it will start up straight away every time and can be left to tick over and sounds perfect wont cut out left it for ten mins was fine. But as i set off down the road for a mile or so, its dies. No jumping just dies. I leave it for ten mins and can set straight back off again.

I have no ideas what it is? any help would be great

Thanks jack the lad (matty)

Carb icing or muck in the tank. Both have symptoms you describe and both go away if car left for a while. Carb icing easy(ish) to cure by making sure the pre-heat system is intact and working. Muck in tank much more long winded to fix.

Do you have the Haynes manual for your car?

On top of the exhaust manifold there should be a tin plate with a corrugated hose coming off it that leads to an elbow in the inlet pipe of the air filter assembly. The part of the inlet pipe that it connects to should also have a small bore vacuum pipe connected to the underside that leads to the rear underside of the air filter behind the carb, There are two connections here. The other goes to somewhere else on the carb, can?t remember where. Check all these are in place as a starting point.

For the tank, look inside the filler with the cap off, can you see any holes or rust? Stick your hand up the wheel arch and feel all around the pipe, pull away any mud etc. Are there any holes? Under the rear seat there is an access panel remove and then remove the fuel level sender (it twists off) Shine in a torch and see if you can see any debris. BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DOING THE ABOVE AS ANY SPARK OR FLAME WILL BLOW UP YOU AND YOUR CAR.
