Help need form potential MK1 owner

HELP needed.

Since I passed my driving test i've always wanted a Mk1 cabriolets. Now 19yrs later I find myself with the motivation and more importantly the cash to actually buy one.

I have been looking at the prices of second hand Gti's and clipper's on Aototrader and generally the asking prices are way above the prices stated by parkers car guide.

Is this to be expected?

After having test driven a number of not too pristene used GTI's I discovered an absoloute gem of a 1.8 clipper in a local garage at the weekend.

It is in imaculate condition and still has the original vinyl roof and hardly a mark on it. It also apears not to have been modified an any way which really appeals to me.

The car is a 1993K with 80,000 miles on the clock with an excellent service history with all but one carried out at a local VW/AUDI garage.

The car has been sitting at the back of the owners garage for the last year so once he has it MOT'd I am going back for a test drive.

Now the bad news.

Depending on what the MOT flags up he is looking for something in the region of ?3700. Parkers have this car valued at ?2570 so that quite a difference.

Ubviously depending on an outstanding performance on the test drive is this a fair price for a mint condition clipper or am I being ripped off.

Any comments on potential problems casued by the car having being off the road for a year would also be welcome.

Thanking you in advance

Neil

I think it is too much and parkers sounds reasonable for a straight, original car. Probably why it has been sat unsold for a year and now summer is here the guy is pushing it. Plenty of nice Clippers around as a large number were second, low mileage cars.

Good luck!

:D its all down to how much you wanna pay..Parkers price guide is rubbish as is all the other price guides they dont give a good estimate of the car ..Ie sierra rs500 very very rare car glasses guide price 5/6 k but in reality these cars are selling for 15 to 25k you cannot put a figure on any classic car its all down to how much the guy wants and having somebody with the cash to buy very limited market for classics...But strong prices due to the classic insurance and desirability of the car. Most old classics will not lose anymore money only gain..

:D A prime example is dubboys car on this thread a real minter but i bet parkers guide would still say its only worth ?500 quid ...but you would never get it for that price

ignore the guides, chk the buyin guide on this site then form your own opinion of wether its worth it,
80k is low miles, and if its a minter then really chk it out, drive it till its well hot .
but i wouldnt pay more than 3k and id want a gti clipper

take the buying guide with you, every thing you find wrong from that is quids off the price

i reckon dubboys right, hes pushin it cos its been stood, hell come right down with that guide in your mitts.

have fun and remember your the one with the wedge in your pocket, hes the one with a load of capital depreciating(stood) car in his lot.
