Help me please!!!

I have recently bought my first VW Golf. Its an '88 cabriolet 1.6L. I would like help on how to improve the performance of my carwithout spending vast sums of cash. I am living on the costa del sol so I do not have access to English garages. Can you lovely people give me suggestions and an approx price so that I can feel more confident when going to garages in Spain to avoid getting ripped off!!!!

I wait hopefully

Start with good tyres and suspension.

If you're sticking with that engine try putting twin carbs like weber dcoe 40's a performance head and cam, filter and exhuast.

All depends on budget.

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

Any one is welcome to stay as long as they bring a sister of legal age and looks that would make the swedish bikini team jealous!!!!!
Thanks for the information given. What would be the approx cost of this type of work as I am a relative virgin to the world of car improvements. I have met a guy who recommended getting the suspension sorted first . Do you agree?

No point in having big power unless you have big brakes and big suspension otherwise you'll leave a big hole in a hedgerow somewhere.

My mate stuck a 1.6 engine in his Nova SR and left it on standard brakes and I ended up driving it into a beer garden - it was hilarious - never seen people vacate pic-nic tables in such a hurry - no one spilled a drop of their drink like.

Okay - you have two options here, you can either tell us how much power you want (either in BHP or 0-60 or top speed) or you can tell us how much you want to spend.

Easiest way to make this car fly is to buy a cheap 1.8 16v engine from a Mk2 GTI and fit that but if that is too exotic there are other ways…
