Hans up if youv'e bought off German E bay

Been thinking of buying stuff off the above, any experieces and advice, especially their system of payments. It seems wierd as it appears you have to give them your bank details first, I normally use Pay Pal so no problems. :dontknow:

as you're in england i doubt they will do the bank details thing, PayPal is the only way really of getting your money across to germany correctly..

i wouldn't have thought that this idea is a bad one, as the only thing thats different is the costs of shipping etc.. but whatever..

i say go for it, because eBay is still eBay in germany, so if whatever you're buying is broken or faulty, then you can stick a claim in nontheless..

Germans don't do Paypal at all really.

There's a few that will offer it but these will be the very few and far between, trust me I looked most days for a few months to get some big mirrors for my van on eBay.de and even if they did paypal you'll have to win the item and convincer them to post overseas.

That and the fees/exchange rates do bump up the price with Paypal.

My brother bought a bonnet bra for his old Audi from German eBay and he says it was really easy to get the funds transferred. You have to get the seller to pass on his bank details included his international banking number (don't quote me on the exact term) and after that it was a simple bank transfer.

You'll be able to speak to someone at your bank who can tell you exactly what details you'll need to get off the seller to transfer the money.

Quite a lot of them speak reasonable to good English so you shouldn't have too much bother with the lingo. If not use the Babelfish translator.

And apart from that it's just like normal eBaying.

,

Bought a few things on German e-bay and never had any probs. As people have mentioned vast majority of sellers dont use PAYPAL, if not its either bank transfer or send money in the post insured.Bank charges are expensive (from ?14 to transfer the money) so that probably wipes out your saving straightaway.I have sent EUROs to Germany with insured post 5 or 6 times and never had a problem.Costs about ?5 for insurance upto ?250 i think .Had small stuff delivered ie, door handles upto a NEW front door and found the German post office better than the UK.go for it

as above, i have done loads of deals from German Ebay, including a set of 17` BBS RS alloys, that i bank transfered ?1500 for 8O and also bought a set of BBS RM`s and other numerous badges, trims etc without any trouble

Transfering moniney is Not as risky as it sounds as you can trace the iban & account number and your bank can trace the money when it is recieved by the bank etc, they do charge about ?20 for doing it though

as said not many Germans entertain Paypal as it dont really benefit them

It carries no more risk than dealing with UK people as they are the only ones who have ever mucked me about or tried to rip me off!!!

I know banks charge for one off transactions but could you not set up a standing order, wait for the 1st payment to clear then cancel the standing order?

Great Link sir, cant see him laughing though.
Any way been to bank and they have not heard of SEPRA which the German bloke told me about. Apparently it's for European countries that have the  Euro as thier currency.

But the info I have is thus:-

The seller should give you the following:-

1) His IBAN account number.

2) The banks SWIFT number (which is usually letters maybe small
amount of numbers).

3) The account holders name/ Account title.

4) Banks name and Address.

The cost of this is  World Pay Service =?9.00 per transaction (under ?1,000) and Priority payment = ?25.00 for over (?1,000)

Not sure this helps as how do I go about paying? do I have to go to the bank armed with the above and they sort it or what?

SEPRA in the UK is termed SEPA

SEPA = Single Euro Payments Area

Basically, it allows all cross-border payments in the Euro Zone to be sent/received in Euro free of charge as though it is a domestic payment.  However as the UK is part of the EU but is not in the Euro Zone UK banks will charge a nominal handling fee for converting from Sterling & remitting the payment in Euro, the beneficiary should not be charged by their bank for receiving the payment.

It maybe worth checking on your banks website AFAIK all banks had to comply with this "regulation" of January 2008.

To send the a payment you will need to go to your bank with -

1. Beneficiary name & address.

2. IBAN - for Germany 22 characters long beginning with DE
(IBAN - Intl Bank Account Number format can be checked here:
http://www.rbsinternat…onal/g4/iban-checker.ashx, it will check the format not if the account details are valid)

3. Swift Address for beneficiary bank also known as Swift BIC.
(Format will be something like NWBKGB2L i.e. NatWest Bank GB or whatever the German Bank Name is.)

Low value payments such as yours should arrive within 3-4 working days.

Can you guess what I do for a living?

Hope that helps

The biggest problem I've had with buying off german ebay is that it goes through Parcel Force when it gets to the UK.

They have messed up big time with many of my parcels, one from Austria went missing (they claimed to have attempted to deliver it twice yet I had no card through to say so) and it finally turned up at their 'International Hub' in Coventry (8 months later) - even though they had claimed to have sent it back to Austria!!!

you dont have to convince them to post it, you ask if they post it, they say no so you just leave it there. no point pissing them off more by bidding and they saying they wont send it.
