GTI Rear Disks as Standard?

Hi, wonder if anyone can help me. Did any of the mk1 GTI's come with rear brake disks as standard, inparticular the early models?

Reason im asking is cos ive just bought a car thats got them and wondered if they were standard. My car used to be a GTI but from what i understand the engine needed replacing and a past owner had a 1600 diesel engine lying around which he dropped in to save costs on the milage he was doing. Its a crime tho if u ask me    !

Thanks, Tom

As far as i am aware NO,  and they are not recommended. u are more prone to losing ht eback end if u have disc brakes, due to the bias, but they look cool!!

Mk1's never came with rear disks, quite a common 'upgrade' though but like c11rgd said.. will make it very easy to lose the back end

Got rear disc conversion on mine and never lost the back - braking seems very stable. (Or maybe I'm not driving hard enough? )

If you set up the LSPV correctly you should not have a problem locking the rears before the fronts. Sounds like yours is adjusted ok Andy.

Thanks guys, it must have been changed at some point then. Any idea of if it was a company that made the conversion kit or will they just have been converted from another car such as the mk2? Just wondered what the spec/size of the disks and calipers are.

The parts are commonly taken from the Mk2 or 16V Scirocco, often using Mk3 calipers as they are less prone to seizing. Rear discs are 226 mm.
