GTI MK1 Buying advice please?

Hi all,
I am new to the forum but not VW's. My first car was an '83 Polo which sold me on the brand and then I had a passat and Golf VR6 which was a great car! I also worked for a VW main dealer for 2 years in the sales dep't.

I may be looking to buy an inexpensive fun car and always loved the mk1 GTI but know very little about them? I would be very grateful for any advice to help me make the right decision.

I was looking at a late campaign model  or may even look for a late cabby? Are the 1.8 cars better than the 1.6 models? Are the cabbys much slower? Are there any common faults I need to look out for?

What ever I decide I would like a car with low owners, have FSH and be a standard  model as I intend to keep it for a while.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Regards
Ashley

Hi Ashley,

Have you seen the buyer's guide on the Home page (under Guides on the right)? There's stuff to look out for when buying a cab, tintop and some checks to make on the Campaign models.
Good luck in your search!  :D

If you're gonna buy a nice one, make sure you do a vehicle history check (HPI check). The first car I bought was lovely, but turned out to be a catC write off. You couldn't tell by lookng at it, it looked perfect. (I only found out when some pillock drove in to the back of me, and the insurance would only pay out about half of what I originally paid) :(

Then get an agreed value insurance policy.

I now got a nice and clean car, 2 previous owners and no skeletons in the cupboard :)

good luck with the search
