Sound , i have heard a rumour that the turbo from a Mk2 Diesel will bolt on a petrol 1800 GTi and make it fly . Any truth in that rumour Bert ?

Bert,

You'll need to change engine mounts, move the fuel filter, fab a downpipe and find a new intercooler.

Oh and let her madge have the duty on any cooking oil that you burn.

Chudd,

It'll fit, it won't work properly

I was looking under the bonnet of a neighbours 1996 Golf/Polo or what ever it was, and looked at the turbo diesel lump, it looked like the GTI's engine block, am I right?

Chudd,i wouldnt say that bolting a turbo on will work,no oil feed and return for a start, also the fueling will need to be altered to give more fuel when the turbo cuts in,
Cheeseman, any pics and info would be nice, ears always open,do you know of a mk1 converted to a turbo diesel?
Cheers Bert

yes,the block is almost identical,it will bolt straight into a big block petrol shell.

Its only a Jetta, and its only mk2 one at that - cut it up  . Presuambly, not worth giving it a wash and polish and selling it on? Seems to be more and more perfectly good cars from the late 80's/early 90's that are worth nothing these days.

Hey Bert,

just working on your pm now - just trying to remember exactly how I did everything!

it does sound almost too good to use, even if it is a mk2 jetta! but yeah the engine will push a mk1 at a good rate, especially with a few tweaks

you could use the turbo on a petrol as a budget DIY project but it will need some mods to work, as said a turbo oil return amongst others, and it won't be ideal as the turbo isn't really suited to a petrol engine, certainly could be a bit of fun though!

Ssssh, don't tell anyone, perfectly good cars for next to nothing makes running a reasonable car stupid cheep. Let people continue to buy brand new, I'll carry on running an old banger  :D

I know of a few A1s (mostly caddys) that run the TD (IDI) VW engine in both 1.9 and 1.6 forms.

MK1VDUB has been a good source of info for me, Morninglight on the caddy forum knows his stuff.

There is good tuning info on the GTD forum and little snippets of A1 install information.

Mine ain't running yet, waiting for my FMIC and trying to sort an airbox - bought 2 so far that don't fit or suit - trying to avoid the cone filter route.

Also have to fabricate the exhaust….but this is it so far.

 I do try

looking good mate :y: , so whats next?

which air boxes have you tried, and what intercooler have you gone for?

I'm just working on what I hope to be my proper exhaust (rather than a total bodge which it is now) at the moment - its proving to be quite a challenge!

its cool to see so many people in the UK doing this - we'll have to have our own section at gaydon at this rate! 8)

I'm next! I think it'll be a Vento turbo diesel for me…one coming my way for nowt. Not gonna rip out the original engine until it's a gonner though, pulls so well as it is. But that just proves that a 1.9 turbo would shift it incredibly compared to the 54hp! I'll no doubt be fishing around for advice when the time comes…good luck Bert, if you decide to change over engines that is.

Cheers you lot! nice to have people to talk too with the same mad plans, the downpipe worries me though, aparently the origional cast iron downpipe will not fit so if a new one is made it will need a flexi joint or there will be snapped pipes coming up,the origional will flex on the gasket and C clip joint  :dontknow:
Cheers Bert
Oh diesel dubber if you wait for the origional engine to pack up you will be old and grey..

Picked a 1.9 TD short motor out of the skip at work - nothing wrong with it - donated as a new demo engine for educational work.

Been sat in the classroom on display for years and they chucked it out because they needed some room.

Theres a full GTD lump with K24 also in the classroom but they've not decided to get rid of that one yet…. I've got first dibs!  8)
