Golf GTI Rivage - Valuation

Would anybody be able to give me a ball park figure for my 1992 K reg, 101,000 miles, 2 owners, good condition, blue with blue hood?

Thanks for your time.

I'd say thats a bit low. I got ?2k for my F reg GTI with 151k on the clock and about 7 owners. It was in good condition though.

It all depends on what someone is prepared to pay. Its geting worards the end of the summer now so expect prices to start to drop a bit.

If the Rivage is good then I expect ?2500 to ?3000+ would be a bit more like it maybe.

It would be interesting to know for sure, you can never really tell with the convertibles. I'm sticking with an upper price of ?2000, maybe someone can cite recent examples which have sold for over this price? I've just had a quick scan of eBay and the most expensive convertible is ?1500. At that age, condition is more important than the exact year, hence a K reg doesn't really have a great advantage over an E reg, for example. Also there are lots and lots of cabbys around (compared to the hatchbacks) so there is no 'classic car' effect of rising prices. So there's a ceiling of around ?2000 for cabbys, unless they're exceptionally good condition.

I would tend to agree with Ross.  The last 4 Rivages that have gone through ebay have fetched between 2600 - 3100, all good condition and around the 100k mark.
The Sportlines are fetching the money at the mo, last 2 ending at 3350 and 3760, again good cond and ave mileage.
But at the end of the day, it's worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it.

Yes but cabby prices are highly seasonal too…

True, but usually by this time of year they're on the way down as the "need a cabriolet for the summer" folks have already bought one. Unless everyone hoping for an Indian summer  . Usually peak around June / July.

Haven't seen any decent looking Rivages/Sportlines for sale for less than ?2750 in the last couple of months. Definetly seem to command a premium over other cabbys and often lower mileage/better condition.

Condition makes a massive difference to the price of a Golf Cabriolet..Don't be put off by what you are reading here, I don't personally agree with all that has been said on this thread, I have recently seen both Rivages and Sportlines go for low and high prices, whether you think one is more desireable than the other is personal taste! If your car is in excellent condition, then there will be someone looking for it, rest assured of that! However, if it is nothing more than average for its year and mileage, then 3k would be about right! I have seen good Rivages with sixty odd thousand miles go for well over 5k this year!
Earlier this year a young lady on here asked me for help with an insurance valuation of her Rivage as it had been damaged! I had about 5 or 6 ebay auction numbers to prove the money that these cars have been making this year! The insurance company had to aknowledge the real value as opposed to the price guide value and as such saved her car from being written off! I hope the 2k suggestion was just a mick take by Paulc just to get a rise out of someone like me and not an honest opinion! It would be misleading and unfair, as you asked for an honest value! There will always be bargains on ebay and there will always be rip offs…I would suggest that those expecting to pay 2k will either be waiting a very long time or are very easilly pleased…. 8O

Well I say, roll on the club valuation service! We have a "price guide" for hatchback Golfs, but there is nothing for the convertibles and I think there is a definite demand for something. Of course, the best guide on price is from cars which actually get bought and sold, rather than plucking numbers from the air, so whoever took it on would need to continually survey the marketplace (not just eBay, which tends to cater for the lower end of the market, with occasional exceptions). For example, dealer forecourts, local paper ads, Auto Trader, newsagent windows, etc.

I just based my price on a notional figure, because I know that there's plenty of convertibles out there for example Escorts, Golf Mk3, etc and often people are not that bothered about it being a Mk1 Golf, they just want a car for not too much money.

Wouldn't agree with that. Mk1 cabs command a higher price than the equivilant escort/astra covertibles. You can also now pick up mk3 golf convertibles for the same price as mk1's cabs, which suggests greater desirabilty for the mk1 :D

I agree, but what I'm saying is that the effect of other convertibles will have a price effect on the Mk1 Golf convertibles. In the supply-demand relationship for cabbys, they are much more perceptible to influence from other cars.

Basically, these days 90% of people seeking to buy a Mk1 Golf hatchback know what it is, what its significance is, and are seeking the Mk1 Golf specifically because its a Mk1 Golf. I'd say only 60% of Mk1 Golf cabby buyers are doing the same, there is a significant minority who are simply looking for a "convertible" or a "nice summer car".

Lorenzo, there seem to be a few personal opinions and biased opinions clouding your initial question of how much your Rivage is worth…I had a look on the Auto trader web site last night and there are about 6 or 7 Rivages for sale on there nationally! Have a look at what they are going for, they vary from under three to over four grand! Remember condition is everything! Best of luck!  :)

Thank you one and all for your opinions. It was a question driven by curiosity rather than need. I have had my Rivage for 11 years and am planning to keep it for a good few years yet. The heavy steering aside I love my car.

i paid ?4000 for mine three years ago.totally standard and mint condition with 45,000 miles on the clock and fsh.As what has been said already, rivage and sportline models do command a higher price but it does depend on condition.i wouldn't let mine go for less than ?4500 and i have got an agreed value of ?5500.
