no easy answer ,what ever you use only seems to last a week or two.
hopfully better weather will help stuff last longer.
i use stuff called vinyl glow which is for interior but is good on exterior stuff.

I think the only permanent solution is one of the specialised "plastic paints" - I forget the company, but am sure maybe someone like Rich (crazyquiff) turned up info on a company that does special plastic paints just for this sort of thing?

I like armour all too. It will wash off though but at least its cheap. Will streak your paintwork if you apply it to rubber trim like side rubbing strips and then it rains.

Its perfect for dashes, etc. though. Motorworld sell a semi-matt one that isnt so glossy. I've only ever seen gloss in halfords.

I'm going grey faster than my car! It's these MOTs and tax discs that are doing it!

Ross - yeah, thats the stuff I was thinking about - Bumpercoat is the most relevant product I think - Type17 mentioned it originally in the post you linked to.

It works by actually dyeing the plastic molecules so should be a bit more permenant. I think its available in aerosol or brush form.

I reckon you guys have got a way to go to catch up with me on the grey front ;). Not even 40 and almost completely grey!!!!!

I find Auto Glym 'Bumper Care' the best - tried a few and this works well on all black exterior trim.

Another post on Bumper Coat:

I used this stuff on the Silver campaign I restored and it was outside for over six months in winter wth no deterioration.

I heard that gently heating them helps, as the plastic returns to it former shape/ colour. I wouldn't want to try it on a decent pair first though. Maybe if you have an old knackard one kicking about try heat it with a hot air gun to see how it goes??

Were mk1 bumpers jet black when new ? I've seen a lot of bumpers like  this. ie repainted. and wonder if they look too black. painted my faded bumpers dark grey last year, and am now wondering should I do them black. :?

The bumpers were black plastic when new I believe - check out some of the brochure shots in the images section. The Campaign brochure has a few shots and the bumpers look pretty black in those.

I think the stuff Rich used,(the one mentioned by Ross further up this thread), is the way to go. It may be more hassle compared to one application of the likes of the autoglym stuff, but you should only have to do it once.

Also its pretty straightforward to remove things like the bumpers and chin spoiler to spray off the car. Granted the wheelarch trims are not so easy.

I bought some new ones from VAG last year. Yes they are black.

I found if you scratch the bumper with say a very coarse brush the black comes back try scraping it with your nail and you will see.
Some one also told me that if you heat it up with a hairdrier and then rub witha corse brush this also works.
Then slap on some back to black etc wortha try :dontknow:

I agree with the stiff brush method. It works the bumper dressing right in and also removes some of the surface crud! You might even try one of those sponges with a white, non scratch scourer (for use on non stick pans)
Whatever you do with regards to scrubbing, try on an inconspicuous area and be sure you are happy that you are getting the desired effect! Best of luck!  :)
