GL? what is this car? is it a luxury model

was driving th eother day and saw an old guy driving a Gold coloured
Y reg
4 door with chrome detailing trim
small bumpers with washer jets on it and gold interior.

what is this and whats it worth it was clean.

Series 2 cars are, in order of specification, etc:

C
CL
GL
GTI

I think the series 2 GLs were only available as 5 doors.

Yup, it'll be a 1457cc (70hp) GL, available with four or five speed manual gearbox or three speed auto box. The additional 'luxuries' compared with C's CL's etc, were:
Headlamp washers, hub caps, metallic paint, internally adjustable mirrors, front door pockets, automatic doubly controlled choke, cigarette lighter, centre console, padded steering wheel, twin tone horn, colour-matched superior seat upholstery and upholstered door cards. I've got the brochure in case you haven't guessed! I've no idea what they're worth nowadays though, or what they cost in 1982/3 for that matter. It depends who's buying I suppose…

Hang on, it was a GLS at todays meet. So you'd expect it to be better equipped than the GL yet it had no squirters and no pockets either. Nice bronze tints though.  :y:

GLS is series 1. The series 1s had a wider spread of models. S typically means big engine, so you had these trim levels:

N
L
GL

and these big engine versions:

S
LS
GLS

and the big engine, 'high' trim:

GTI


In this instance, GL means high trim, small engine. A combination which was no longer offered (in the UK) for series 2s. I think…….dubboy, where are you????????

There was no official N base model, it was simply termed "Golf" although VW UK did use the N designation unofficially.

The GLS was also available for the first couple of years of the Series 2.

Here is the full line up of the regular Series 1 models excluding special edition and export models such as the Driver, E, M, SC, etc.

Yes, the C and CL were introduced for 1982 Model Year. The GL was available briefly for the Series 1, though with the smaller engine.

Aaaah right, I'd associated the name (designtation) change with the series change! Just as well they didn't muck around and do several different GTIs

What I meant was, there was only ever one GTI, although its specification changed a lot through its lifetime. This just relates to Mk1s, I know it got silly in later Mks, with the G60, VR6s, R32, 5 doors, diesels, etc

hi people ,i can see you no what you are talking about so i have a question.why would my gti convertable havve no light washers manual windows but an electric roof? whats that all about?i am gessing all of the above were optional extras.its a 1990 g plate if that helps.
