not yet, but  other day in my mk2 parked in centre car park, went to get a ticket looked back to see traffic warden checking car out, he asked girlfriend about  number plates . she told him all she knew was it was a dutch import (left hand drive fire & ice ). he then waffled on blakey stylee about that must be why and how he doesn't miss a trick ect ……..

A bloke came over to me whilst i was inflating my tyres to point out that it was illegal. However, he did say he used to be into french motors and supposedly if you put some tape over the german bit then it's legal. Not sure how true that is, but i spose if it means not being spotted whilst going to shows its a good idea. Although i suppose it defeats the purpose of having them on in the first place if you're just driving round normally with them.  :banghead:

Cheeky plug indeed!

I got mine from www.retrowagen.com - a bit pricier at.. it's either ?40 or ?45 a pop, but they're much better quality.. err lol.  Nah, he's a good mate and does an impeccable service.

Just got them tonight in fact!  Was fun getting the old plates off..    Front one shattered, rear one is in one piece - will be good for trailer/bike rack actually.

Anywho, pics:

Mk1Munky - re. the legality: they aren't reflective so no, they're not legal.  But they're legible enough.. just don't answer the policeman back I suppose, and be polite!  Although they look pretty reflective in the pic.. also, they're not the compulsory font.

Retro's are from Germany too!  lol, and the US ones from the US.  In fact, probably the same German plate maker.. :)

I got pulled last night in my C for having german plates on. I dont have the country letter on just plain. The copper was nice about it explained that they were illigal as they dont register on their detectors and dont get picked up on speed cameras. Didnt even ask for producer or anything just advised me to change them asap.
Also said they looked really nice and were ideal for shows etc 8)

So will you change back Tim?

My front plate shattered as we had to snap it off as the screw was rusty.. have a nasty feeling it was the original plate!  Now what'll I do for an MOT.. just put it through with those plates I suppose, see what happens.  Some centres don't mind them.

for mot it does not matter, as long as they are legaly spaced and can be read from a distance then it will pass, the mot law is diffrent to the road traffic act law, for mot, they dont have to be reflective either aslong as they are visable  and can b legal read! ;)

its like other things aswell, if you have smoothed your door handles, just leave your window open, as you can then lean through and open it from the inside, front windows fully tintd, wind them right the way down as the mot inspecter can not wind them up to check them, as he can not remove a baby seat from the car to check the seat belt where it is placed as if they remove it and you then have an accident and something happens to the kid they can be liable, another one is if a car is on a Q plate it has to be mot'd at pre 78?? spec as they can not guarentee its the same engine chassis body etc so no you dont have to have a cat or side repeaters or fog lights etc. theres loadsa "grey areas" read into it and youll be suprised, but on somethings it may not come under the mot law but can come under the road trafic act.

not alowed to move or remove anything to check,
eg. if the brake resovoir is dirty and mucky on the outside, there not allowed to undo the lid to look inside to see if the brake fdluid is below the min level. not allowed to remove wheel trims to make sure it has all the bolts holding the wheel on. crazzzy ain it,
