Good luck with the new venture. You obviously need to make sure an potential name hasn't been "taken" by contacting compaines house and Google'ing. When my brother started his detailing business it took ages to come up with a decent name that wasn't already in use and wasn't too close to their names.

Dream Clean - Taken
Divine Shine - Think Divine Detailing is taken

Looks like my brother is selling up his valet/detailing business, including his domain name, web site and other bits like leaflet/business card masters (InDesign), headed paper (Word). It's called "Inspired Details" domain inspired-details.co.uk The site is currently offline but there's a small screen grab at:

www.glyfz.com/site.png

The porfolio section shows cars you've detailed as a fancy slide show, zooming etc. which looks neat.

He'll be getting rid of his fully fitted out, sign written van (easy to change the phone number), tools (paint guage, DA & rotary polishers, jet wash, generator, lamps, gazebo, fogger…), waxes, polishes, shampoos…, so basically everything you need. The web site alone would save a fair amount in design costs. I'd probably be able to find the time to edit the site with your details & services.

Unfortunately in this crappy corner of the UK there just isn't enough work to do it full time, shame considering the amount of effort and expense we put in to it. So it's time for him to move on.

PM me if you're interested in any of it and I'll talk to him about it (let me know your e-mail address).

you really need to get what you do in the name.Divine detailing etc is fine but the ordinary joe wanting their car cleaning and vacuuming is going to type valetting into google or yellow pages not detailing.

If its a business people need to identify what you do by the name of your business
The name should do what it says on the tin.

Valliant Valet Services

If you lived in Wales you could have Valley Valet…

Aardvark Valeting gets you to the top of yellow pages or AA Valeting etc etc

People who want their cars detailed as opposed to a simple valet are more likely to do a web search than look in the yellow pages. Therefore page rank is more important than alphabetical order.

When I created my brothers site I spent a couple of months on SEO (search engine optimisation) which got his site on to page 1 of Google/MSN/Yahoo for keywords we were interested in even though the site was new, often ranking higher than any other competitor.

Of course a good reputation is even better but that can't be created over night, so SEO and other techniques need to be employed especially to start with, and should really be continued even after you become well known.

Even for valeting people are unlikely to use YP, they're more likely to respond to direct calls (for businesses) or leaflets, especially if there's a money off coupon attached.

What we found down here was valeting for businesses was pretty much a no go as there are so many Eastern Europeans here that were doing it for peanuts. For a complete interior, exterior valet, alloys cleaned and car waxed they were charging less than ?10. A good couple of hours work for a one man business, after taking off expenses, tax and NI you'd be better off working at McD's so no way could we compete in that sector.

So I'd always go for a catchy name ahead of rubbish ones like A+, Aarvark (sorry peeps) etc. And if you think that you're going to be mainly a valeting company then don't have "details" or "detailing" in the company name as your target customers are unlikely to know what detailing means.

Taken, you should really Google before suggesting, you should also do a quick check to see if the domain name is available, you normally want a web site to go with your business.

Wasn't meant to be rude, just there's no point suggesting names if they're already taken and a quick Google is all that's required at this stage.

As for seeing if the domain name is free then do a check with any of the hosting companies such as

www.123reg.co.uk

just type in the domain on the front page, eg. Aardvark and it will tell you the availablitiy. Ideally you'd want a .co.uk domain as that's what people think of when it comes to UK businesses. Something like .uk.com not so good and, in this case, neither is .com as that's more of a global thing.

Implies something is free which isn't the case, also IMO 3+ word company don't usually work (of course there are exceptions).

I think the most successful 2 work business names tend to rhyme or at least flow nicely as they are then more easily remembered. Just as an example, Violet's Valets rather than Aarvark Valets.
