Free car tax?

My GTI is 23 years old and is fast approaching the 25 year mark, will I get free car tax?

Cheers

No, afraid not. Government froze the rolling 25 year rule in 1998 so tax exemption is only for pre 73 cars. Otherwise mine would become eligiable for it next year  :x

No, they changed it, I think its only for pre 1973 cars now. I maybe wrong on the year, but I'm fairly sure we won't qualify unless something is changed again.

Cheers,

Jon.

I think a 1973 car would actually be eligable, seem to remember this when for some reason I was looking into buying an MGB a while back. 1974 and newer is not though, so it doesn't help anyone owning a golf. Shame :( Was looking forward to 2008 when mine would become tax free had they still had that rule.  :(

In Ireland once its 30 years old its vintage tax ?30 or something like that, and you dont pay any Import duty if your importing a car over 30 years old

The Historic Car Road Tax category applies to cars manufactured before 01/01/73.  Note manufactured, not registered, so one that took a while to get registered will be OK but you need proof.

Thanks for the thought, but the only two Mk1's that I imported from the UK, were exempt, because I was immigrating (back) to Ireland and had owned the cars for longer than 6 months, whilst living in the UK.

However, thank goodness that we don't have SORN over here - I'd have an administrational nightmare!

On the other hand, we do have really nasty car tax (for cars under 30 years old), when it is on the road - based on engine size, and up to stg?900 per year (for engines over 3000cc), and the roads are awful - hardly any motorways, and really poor levels of the 3 E's: Education, Engineering, & Enforcement…
