Failed her MOT today

But, only on the rear fog light SWITCH!
The fog light works fine, but the little light in the switch doesn't!

Ordered a new switch from euro car parts who are, as i type, delivering it to the garage.

Hopefully when i go back at 5pm it should be cool and have passed!?
I was dreading today! Well impressed!
Of all the things I thought it might fail on, that was not one of them! :D

Cheers,

Liam

Is that really an MOT failure?!?!?!

The tester must have been very bored, or very picky, or just got out of bed the wrong side this morning…

Unfortunate but at least they should retest it for free this afternoon I guess…

8O my tester makes me sit in the drivers seat doing all the braking, light tests etc.

that is a bit picky! guess at least you know the car is tip top though

Bloody hell, what a fool.

everyone knows NO-ONES fog light bulbs work anyway - well at least i think thats the case with the amount of idiots driving round with them on all the time.

Don't go for an MOT there again then.  :(

The place seems pretty good, they adjusted the handbrake free off charge, and theres a massive crack in the windscreen, although the wipers have been adjusted so not in the swept area.
However, euro car parts have let me down today went back down there at 5 to find they hadn't delivered the switch and after much chasing on the phone turns out they haven't got switches in stock anyway.
So with me working all day tomorrow the chances of the free re test are getting slimmer and slimmer.
Gonna ring GFS tomrrow from work to see if they can help me out!

Cheers,

Liam

that really is a silly thing to fail on. my impreza failed on that, never take any cars to MOT there again
Thing is you can tell by looking at the switch if its on or not, and you cant see the little light away as its behind the steering wheel from the drivers seat view

It might seem silly but its a requirement. The reason is, to indicate the fog lights are on. I've lost count of the number of people who have their rear fogs on when they shouldn't have. So it makes sense to me.

If you want to avoid using the garage for it, then I suppose that's your choice, there's plenty of others who do MoTs. But they're just doing their job, right?

Yes,the tester is doing his job right,i try not to be too picky,if you read the bottom of the new style certificate it says"A test certificate is not evidence that the vehicle is in a satisfactory condition" and when i went for mot training they told us that the mot is the minimum standard for a car to be on the road, and i quote "as long as it is to the required standard at the time of test, not the day after as anything can happen to a vehicle in 24 hrs,to exclude corrosion as this dont come overnight"

yeah so why is it that every car I see with its rear fogs on is a newish car with a massive great fog tell tale lamp on it, I can't say i've seen that many classic cars running around with this fault, its all about the owner I guess. Yes the guy is 'just doing his job' but come on if its the only thing the car failed on it shows he was just looking for faults where as your average tester would have been happy to pass it on it overall condition.
I feel strongly that the MOT should be a good as possible and cars should be corrosion and mechanical defect free.

I aint an expert (Bert is…..) but I'm happy for an MoT tester to go through a specific list of things to check, and "look for faults". Its true that the MoT has become tighter, also that some of the less reputable garages (I'm sure we've all heard stories of "Straight through Steve", etc) have been caught and have their testers certificates revoked. So whereas before the overall condition counted, nowadays its down to the individual items.

MoT testers still have a lot of discretion, for example, corrosion, condition of wiper blades, how much 'play' is too much in the wheel bearings and suspension components, etc etc. so its worth staying on the side of the MoT tester, for sure! No point making enemies. My local garage understands that they aren't really going to get any work off me and also they're really quite busy, so they don't 'generate' work by failing on things then offering to repair it.

On the original point, on a Mk1 Golf, the tiny little light that indicates if the rear foglamp is on, is rather ineffective!!! So I can see your point about having a little moan about it. Doesn't help when ECP muck you around either.

Me expert  :?
I try to be fair,I DO NOT GENERATE WORK i have too much anyway, even if i was skint and had no work i would go and work on my mk1

Meticulous

Personally I would be happy if it failed on that! Sort of gives you confidence that everything else is checked thoroughly and you can be insured of the integrity of your beloved Golf.

My local ECP is alright. I know most of the staff by name, now. I go in there probably once or twice a week, for the past couple of years….. (I also know the local motor factor, and VW Dealer, just as well). The staff are good and they do their best, but like any other business its cost-driven so they 'economise' on certain areas. For example, they have a bit of a bizarre computer parts looking-up system which seems to randomly say if the part's in stock or not.

yes the stock is sometimes missing,it seems to dissapear like a fart in the wind, and the staff change once a week  8O

ECP actually delivered the switch to the garage today?! 8O
Even though i was told last night there was no record of my order and that the switches were out of stock!
So i managed to get the free re-test! :?
So i now have an mot'd golf that i know has been thoughly tested!

Fantastic!

Maybe it was the ear-bashing i gave them down the phone yesterday evening?! Or maybe they just don't keep track of they're orders?
I don't care, i have an mot! Hey Hey!
Just as well that GFS, VW and my local breakers yard were all out of stock!

They say they're out of stock, but they probably have one physically there, the computer just doesn't know about it!
